Qualifiers for all 2026 Signature Events, THE PLAYERS and majors

In the context of consolation prizes, the BMW Championship doubles as a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

While there’s always something to chase at every PGA TOUR stop, the spoils often aren’t as immediately realized as they are when the dust settles following the penultimate tournament of the FedExCup season. Winners who clutch trophies, pose for photographs and light up social media are guaranteed experiences, but secondary objectives can require more time to develop.

This is not the case right now.

Yes, Wyndham Clark won the BMW Championship by three strokes at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis. It’s his third victory of the season. However, his second at the U.S. Open secured exemptions into that major through 2036 and spots in the next five editions of the other three majors. His PGA TOUR membership status as a U.S. Open champ also extended to 2031, so all he gained via his third win of the year was two spots in the FedExCup ranking where he’s now third.

He already was a lock to advance to the TOUR Championship anyway, so even that was not impacted. OK, so $3.6 million in prize money ain’t too shabby as he’ll figure out something to do with the latest windfall, but no doubt his focus remains on winning the 20th FedExCup title this week. Oh, and after also automatically qualifying for the Presidents Cup U.S. Team, the FedExCup is the only target left that he hasn’t hit this season.

For the rest of the 49 in play at Bellerive, they were after one of the other 29 spots inside the top 30 of the FedExCup, for that’s the coveted bubble that determines the field for the Playoffs finale.

A high percentage of competitors upon arrival were safe but 10% were replaced by Gary Woodland (18th), Patrick Cantlay (19th) and Robert MacIntyre (25th). They finished a respective T4, second and T7 at the BMW Championship. (Kurt Kitayama, Rickie Fowler and Bud Cauley were bounced to 31st, 33rd and 34th, respectively.) For their efforts, the top 30 secures exemptions into the Masters, U.S. Open and The Open Championship next year. All also are equipped with a two-year PGA TOUR membership exemption through 2028, if necessary.

This season, both Adam Scott and Sahith Theegala played off this exemption earned in 2024. At 28th in the FedExCup this year, Scott returns to the TOUR Championship. Theegala wrapped his campaign at 48th, so he’s exempt into all 2027 Signature Events with all of the others inside the top 50.

For the second straight year, the TOUR Championship will be a traditional, stroke-play competition. (Starting Strokes were abandoned last year.) Therefore, everyone has the same chance to capture an official victory and the FedExCup title that goes with it. In addition to those career achievements, he will be exempt as the FedExCup champ through 2031. All others will have to settle for the aforementioned berths, rewards and their cut of a $40-million purse of which $10 million is reserved for the winner.
