PGA TOUR delves into Artificial Intelligence
PGA TOUR's use of AI digitally transforms content to quickly, efficiently reach fans around the world

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA – Following successful technology launches over the last three years in augmented reality and virtual reality, the PGA TOUR has unveiled Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms to enhance broadcast and digital storytelling. Among the TOUR’s primary areas of focus in AI are a Microsoft-developed Content Relevancy Engine (CRE), a smart video clipping tool and an automated story creator that all utilize data captured by ShotLink powered by CDW.

Microsoft has collaborated with the TOUR to develop an application built on Microsoft’s Azure cloud that can sift through nearly 20 years of statistical data collected by the TOUR’s proprietary scoring system, ShotLink powered by CDW, as well as 80,000-plus hours of video in the TOUR’s digital library to provide real-time statistical trends and storylines relevant to the current action. The CRE provides contextual content for television broadcasts and digital properties to enhance fan understanding of competitive situations as they occur.

Having compelling and relevant content at our finger tips allows us to instantly provide the broadcast team with supporting information surrounding the action as it happens. Through Artificial Intelligence, we can build systems that continue to learn and develop on their own, allowing the TOUR’s platforms to evolve with the fan.”
To illustrate CRE, we will use a recent example of a situation in which it was utilized. At the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide in June, Bryson DeChambeau was clinging to the lead in the final round when he missed the green on the par-5, 15th hole, leaving himself 57 feet from the hole. At this point, he was 15 of 19 in Scrambling to lead the field. DeChambeau pitched to within 5 feet of the hole, a distance from which he converted 46 of 50 times for the week. Sure enough, he made the putt to maintain the lead and went on to win his second PGA TOUR title in a playoff.
The information above was instantly available to the broadcast team to aid in building suspense as the action was unfolding on the course. Previously, this level of detail would not have been compiled until after the moment had passed. Prior to the CRE, TOUR staff and broadcast teams would spend large amounts of time preparing statistical packages and graphics prior to the round that often went unused if the anticipated scenario didn’t play out.
“The PGA TOUR has been passionate about finding patterns and presenting its massive amounts of content in a more structured way for broadcast producers so they can spend more time doing what they do best: telling amazing stories,” said Mike Downey, Principal Engineer, Microsoft. “Through the Content Relevancy Engine, we’ve helped the TOUR make content more accessible. Now instead of requesting manually-created, custom data feeds from the TOUR, broadcasters can build their own. This solution will continue to learn patterns and get smarter over time.”
Smart Video Generation
Working with WSC Sports, the TOUR is now using their AI driven smart video generation platform to analyze TOUR broadcast video along with data from ShotLink to generate content for all PGA TOUR digital platforms. Within minutes, the video generation platform creates a variety of highlights including a five-minute video package of a player’s round, a task that previously took hours to produce and post to digital platforms. The TOUR will continue to work with WSC to grow this service to provide a wide variety of video content including specific highlight packages of players from selected countries for distribution to partners around the world.

“Streamlining video generation workflows using WSC's advanced technology will help keep our fans engaged, enhance audiences' digital experience on any digital platform and expand the TOUR's global reach," said Scott Gutterman, VP Digital Operations at the PGA TOUR.
The TOUR leveraged Narrative Science’s NLG platform, Quill, to automatically write round recaps customized for every player in the field following every round of a tournament. Quill transforms the player’s most recent and pertinent performance stats into insightful recaps available on PGATOUR.COM or for fans using an internet search engine. “The automated story platform is in response to our fans and their desire to read about players who may not be at the top of the leaderboard,” said Gutterman. “With the help of Narrative Science’s platform, we now produce an AP Style formatted story for each player in the field following every round. The stories also help the TOUR build upon our search engine optimization across the internet. We will continue to improve this tool by posting related video and photo assets from the TOUR’s vast digital library.”
PGA TOUR Innovation Highlights
· THE PLAYERS Championship in 2017 marked the first time a major sports event distributed live 360 VR on Twitter. Soon after, the PGA TOUR and Intel announced an exclusive relationship to produce and globally distribute live virtual reality (VR) and live 360 video via Twitter.
· In a major announcement in June of 2018, Discovery and the PGA TOUR unveiled plans to form a pioneering strategic alliance to create a new international multi-platform home for golf, delivering the sport’s most exciting moments, players and championships to passionate fans around the world on every screen and device.
· The PGA TOUR was the first sports league to utilize AR in a live competition. Development of the PGA TOUR AR app in collaboration with POSSIBLE Mobile, part of the creative agency POSSIBLE, was aided by existing data gathered by ShotLink powered by CDW. The PGA TOUR AR app was built using ARKit in iOS 11 to provide immersive AR experiences for the game of golf.
· The PGA TOUR was also the first sports league to have a virtual reality app on the Oculus Platform and the first sports league to develop a unique experience for Amazon Echo.
· The PGA TOUR HoloLens app, which debuted this year at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, is available for free in the Microsoft store (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/b/home). The HoloLens app integrates post round data to create a 3D model of TPC Scottsdale that can be displayed on a tabletop or any flat horizontal surface.
· In 2018, the TOUR worked with XUMO, the premier live and video-on-demand (VOD) over-the-top (OTT) service for the digital age, to bolster its growing lineup of diverse channel offerings. It marked the first ad-supported PGA TOUR “OTT channel” available on smart TVs. The PGA TOUR’s channel on XUMO is available on LG’s Channel Plus service, Hisense, Sharp, VIZIO and Panasonic connected devices.
