Boston Common Golf started strong, survived a late surge, and ultimately came out on top with a 7-6 overtime win over Jupiter Links GC in a Sunday night thriller at SoFi Center.

The Ballfrogs had already locked up a playoff spot, but Sunday’s victory clinched the No. 1 overall seed for Boston entering the postseason.

While Jupiter narrowly missed out an epic comeback win, they secured one point with the overtime loss and will make the postseason if they beat The Bay Golf Club on Tuesday in the final match of the regular season.

    Key moments

    • WORST TO FIRST: The Ballfrogs had a year to forget in Season 1, going winless in the initial campaign and earning just one point with an overtime loss to Jupiter. Now the Ballfrogs are guaranteed the No. 1 seed after going 4-1-0 in Season 2, with Sunday’s victory capping a brilliant comeback in their second go-round at SoFi Center. “We put the work in,” Keegan Bradley said. “We want to get better every time we come in here, but this means a lot to us, playing for the city of Boston. To be the No. 1 seed in the playoffs means a lot and we’re excited.”
    • FIGHT TO THE FINISH: Having already holed several clutch putts on the night, including a 6-footer at No. 8 that saved two points and tied the hole with the Hammer in play, Boston’s Hideki Matsuyama missed an 8-footer at No. 14 that would have secured the victory. That gave Jupiter a chance to force overtime at the last and Tom Kim did exactly that, reaching the green in two at the par-5 "Stone & Steeple" and carding a birdie to tie the match on the final hole.
    • SEND IT: Rory McIlroy didn’t exactly ease into things at the first, the par-4 "Cut the Sails." Hitting the first shot of the match, he ripped a 392.3-yard drive down the left side of the fairway to set a new record for longest drive at SoFi Center – breaking the previous mark set by his teammate, Bradley, during the Ballfrogs’ loss to Atlanta Drive GC last week. Bradley still made his mark with a 10-foot birdie make, capitalizing on McIlroy’s drive to give Boston a 1-0 lead out of the gate.

    Triples

Trailing 3-2, Boston threw the Hammer after Matsuyama nearly aced the par-3 "Cliffhanger." Jupiter accepted and made par while the Ballfrogs had a tap-in birdie to go up 4-3.

Boston added another point at its team hole, "Storrowed," with a conceded eagle to make it 5-3 entering singles.

Jupiter got hot with back-to-back birdies to take a 3-1 lead, starting with a strong chip to 3 feet for Akshay Bhatia at No. 2 to tie the match, 1-1. Jupiter threw the Hammer with both teams off the green at the par-3 third, "Fallen Pine." Boston accepted and Bhatia drained a 15-footer from the fringe for a two-point swing to make it 3-1.

Jupiter declined a Boston Hammer throw at the fourth to cut their lead to 3-2.

McIlroy helped Boston get on the board first with a 392.3-yard drive, the longest in TGL history, at "Cut the Sails." Bradley then made a 10-footer for birdie as the Ballfrogs took a 1-0 lead.

    Singles

Down two with two to play, Jupiter got it done with Max Homa making par for a point at No. 14 and Kim sinking a 6-footer for birdie at the last to tie the match at 6 and send it to overtime.

McIlroy and Bhatia traded birdies at the par-5 "Caverns" to get Singles started, but Jupiter cut into the lead at No. 11 when they threw the Hammer ahead of an 8-foot birdie try for Homa. Boston declined and the Ballfrogs led 5-4 with four to play.

Bradley answered immediately with a great tee shot at No. 12, hitting it to 10 feet at the par-3 "On the Rocks." He walked in the birdie putt to give Boston some breathing room with a 6-4 advantage.

McIlroy made an all-world par at No. 13, "Stinger," after hitting it off the rocks into the water off the tee. He then bested his earlier record-setting drive with a massive 240-yard draw inside 8 feet, converting the par putt to tie the hole and keep it 6-4 with two to play.

    Overtime

In a best-of-three, closest-to-the-pin shootout, Boston took the first matchup when Bradley’s shot hit the flagstick and settled inside 3 feet.

Jupiter got one back when McIlroy hit his shot into a greenside bunker, but the Ballfrogs prevailed by the narrowest of margins when Matsuyama hit his shot four inches closer than Homa’s to secure the win.

    They said it

    • Jupiter Links Golf Club: “It looked like we had it and it was frustrating. I feel for the guys. They fought hard. ... It came down to the last shot and, unfortunately, it’s hard. It’s part of our sport, it’s part of competition. It’s frustrating when you end up on this side of it.” – Tiger Woods
    • Boston Common Golf: “It was sort of back and forth all night. I felt like Jupiter played well, we were trading birdies and they played all the way to the end ... We knew we clinched the playoffs anyways, but obviously a great way to end the regular season with a win.” – Rory McIlroy

    Next at SoFi Center

The fight for the final two playoff spots continues at 7 p.m. ET on Monday as Los Angeles Golf Club takes on New York Golf Club on ESPN2, with NYGC needing a win to keep its playoff hopes alive.

Jupiter returns to SoFi Center at 9 p.m. on Tuesday to play The Bay Golf Club in the regular season finale.

The Season 2 playoffs begin with back-to-back semifinals March 17.
