FedExCup update: Michael Brennan, Beau Hossler poised for post-season push at Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Only one day remains in the PGA TOUR regular season, and the Wyndham Championship has plenty of intrigue left to play out.

With the FedExCup Playoffs starting next week, the race to finish inside the top 70 is ablaze. Among the biggest movers heading into Sunday are Beau Hossler and Michael Brennan, who have surged inside the all-important line. If they can hold their positions Sunday, they’ll extend their seasons and earn a spot in the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first leg of the Playoffs.

Projected in

Beau Hossler (FedExCup No. 122, projected No. 54): It’s win or go home for Hossler. The 31-year-old needs nothing short of his first PGA TOUR victory to vault from No. 122 into the top 70 and extend his season into the FedExCup Playoffs. And with Hossler currently tied for the lead at Sedgefield Country Club, that improbable scenario is very much alive.

“I've played a lot of good golf in my career. I've won a lot of golf tournaments. I haven't done it at this level yet. I know it's going to be a challenge,” said Hossler, who sits at 16 under and shares the 54-hole lead with Michael Brennan. “Even par is not going to cut it tomorrow, so I need to come out from the first hole and be looking to get the ball in play off the tee and give myself birdie looks.”

Hossler has been a steady presence on TOUR for nearly a decade, making more than 160 cuts and earning more than $14.5 million. While victory has remained elusive – he’s finished runner-up four times – the nine-year veteran has held a share of the 54-hole lead four previous times in his career and says he’ll draw on that experience come Sunday.

“To answer your question, what have I learned, honestly, I think you learn by just doing and having experience," said Hossler. "Anything that you do for the fifth time versus the first time is going to be a bit more comfortable. With that being said, it's been so long, it didn't happen last week, so there's going to be some nerves, and hopefully I can handle it really well.”

A former University of Texas standout and teammate of current world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Hossler won the prestigious Fred Haskins Award as the nation’s top collegiate golfer in 2016. Away from the course, he launched his own coffee company, Beaurista, in 2025 after developing a passion for coffee and seeking out great coffee experiences during his travels.

On Saturday, Hossler appeared poised to take another step toward the unlikeliest of playoff berths. He held a one-shot lead when play was suspended by lightning, only to return and make his first bogey of the day after a three-putt at the par-3 16th. Still, with 18 holes remaining, Hossler controls his own destiny – and a victory would turn a season that began with three straight missed cuts into a postseason berth no one saw coming.

Michael Brennan (FedExCup No. 105, projected No. 47): Brennan has put himself in position to make a significant jump when it matters most. The 24-year-old Wake Forest product needs a three-way T2 finish to earn a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, and he did his part Saturday, firing a blistering 63 that included five birdies on his back nine. Brennan opened with rounds of 66-65 to make his 17th cut in 23 starts this season.

Brennan already knows what it feels like to pull off an unexpected breakthrough. He won the Bank of Utah Championship last October in his first start as a professional, earning his first PGA TOUR victory before he had even begun to establish himself on TOUR. Now, after starting the week outside the top 100 in the FedExCup standings, he has a chance to make another big move – this time toward the postseason.

“Yeah, it would be huge. I mean, I would be playing in Memphis next week,” Brennan said after his round. “I saw on the board projected with a win I would move to 47, which would be inside 50 and give me a good chance at staying there the following week. See, I'm already starting to think ahead to the BMW (Championship) and that's a problem. We still have so much golf to play tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to the challenge."

For Brennan, the possibilities are suddenly much bigger than simply making the FedExCup Playoffs. A strong finish Sunday could put him in position to keep climbing through the postseason – although, as he acknowledged, he may have to stop himself from looking quite that far ahead.

Projected out

Matti Schmid (FedExCup No. 67, projected No. 71): Schmid appeared to be in good shape after opening at Sedgefield with rounds of 64-67, but a rocky 75 on Saturday has put the German in precarious standing. The 28-year-old is in his fourth season on TOUR and still searching for his first win, and he’s put together a solid 2026 season, making 13 cuts in 21 starts and recording three top-10 finishes. His best result came at the PGA Championship, where he finished T4. But after Saturday’s stumble, he’ll need a strong final round to keep his postseason hopes alive.

Steven Fisk (FedExCup No. 69, projected No. 72): Fisk’s postseason hopes took a hit early in the week. The 29-year-old missed the cut Friday after rounds of 72-70, leaving him on the outside looking in despite entering the Wyndham Championship at No. 69 in the FedExCup standings.

Fisk is a two-time PGA TOUR winner, having captured his second title earlier this season at the ISCO Championship. But the victory has been followed by a difficult stretch: Fisk has missed the cut in each of his last three starts at the 3M Open, Rocket Classic and Wyndham.

On the bubble

Ricky Castillo (FedExCup No. 66, projected No. 70): Castillo came into Wyndham inside the top 70, but after an even-par 70 on Moving Day, he now finds himself as the projected “bubble boy” heading into Sunday. He easily made the cut with opening rounds of 67-68, but he was derailed Saturday by a double bogey at No. 12 followed by bogeys on his final two holes to erase much of his cushion.

The 25-year-old secured his first TOUR victory earlier this season, breaking through at the Puerto Rico Open. Now he’ll have to navigate a very different kind of pressure Sunday as he tries to hold on to his postseason spot.

Notables: Koivun strengthens position; Thompson mounts charge

Jackson Koivun (FedExCup No. 70, projected No. 67): Koivun came into the Wyndham Championship as the bubble boy at No. 70, but the 21-year-old has done himself a favor through 54 holes. After making the cut with two shots to spare, Koivun carded a 66 Saturday to move to T15 and improve his position heading into the final round. The timing is especially notable for a player who turned professional in June and won the 3M Open in just his third start as a pro.

With every shot carrying potential postseason consequences, Koivun knows there’s plenty of temptation to think about where he stands in the FedExCup. But he’s trying to keep his focus on the task in front of him. “Yeah, it's just good for my confidence. It's hard not to think about that spot you're in, but I mean every shot matters. So just giving it my all on every shot and just try and go and put up a good score.”

Davis Thompson (FedExCup No. 81, projected No. 73): Thompson endured a Saturday full of highs and lows. He carded an albatross – making a “2” at the par-5 fifth – but later had to deal with a cracked driver head on No. 14 and call in for a replacement head. Now, sitting three shots off the lead, Thompson needs to finish in a two-way tie for sixth or better to move inside the top 70 and earn a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs.

For Thompson, the pressure of the bubble is nothing new. He has been in this position before, including coming up one shot short last year. His approach this time is simple: “I think the mindset is try to go win the golf tournament. It's hard not to think about it. It's a mental battle not to think about it. It's my fourth year on TOUR and two of the three years I've been right on the bubble, so I've got experience with it. Hopefully I can draw on those experiences and just go execute good golf shots and just commit to my reads and just really be mentally tough out there.”
