Doc Redman earns special temporary membership after runner-up finish in Detroit

Doc Redman started his week shooting a lights-out 62 in Monday Qualifying to get into the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He ended it by finishing solo second, securing special temporary membership on the PGA TOUR.
It was quite an emotional rollercoaster for the former U.S. Amateur champion who was only beaten out by the supreme efforts of Nate Lashley. Instead of heading to a Mackenzie Tour–PGA TOUR Canada start next week he has a slot locked up in the new 3M Open if he wants it.
Considering he was planning on trying to Monday Qualify for the event in Minnesota with a backup plan of playing in Ontario, you can be almost certain he’ll line up at the Twin Cities.
The 21-year-old shot 68-67-67-67 to finish 19 under at Detroit Golf Club, and his 300 non-member FedExCup points give him 344 on the season. Currently that number would have him inside the top 125 and if he can remain in front of whomever sits 125th at seasons end he will have locked up a PGA TOUR card for 2019-20.
At the very least he has earned himself a trip to the Korn Ferry Tour Finals where he could also lock up playing privileges.
“It’s awesome," said Redman, who also earned a trip to The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. "It went by really quick. I was just trying to play well every day and I did that. It's awesome playing out here and I'm glad I get the opportunity to do that."
“It hasn't sunk in, but in the next few hours it definitely will and it's a great feeling.”
Redman will now play in his second major championship at The Open from July 18-21. As the 2017 U.S. Amateur champion he was eligible for starts at the 2018 U.S. Open and Open Championship but forfeited his spot by turning professional after playing the 2018 Masters, where he missed the cut.
“I actually just learned that not long after I got off the course,” he said of his spot at Royal Portrush.
“I didn't even think about that, but I can't wait. I've never been over there; it's going to be an awesome experience and I can't wait to see how it is.”
