Win drought continues for Martin Kaymer, Adam Scott and Jordan Spieth the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide

Adam Scott rolls in 28-foot birdie putt at the Memorial

DUBLIN, Ohio – Adam Scott did enough to win the last eight Memorial Tournaments Presented by Nationwide at Muirfield Village … but not this one.

Martin Kaymer looked in control at the turn but sputtered down the stretch.

Jordan Spieth needed something red hot in the final round but instead deferred that option to his junior golf rival Patrick Cantlay who streaked all and sundry to claim a second PGA TOUR win.

And so, for the aforementioned three, their win droughts continue.

For the Australian Scott, a 4-under 68 to get to 17 under, was impressive golf. His runner-up finish was a bitter pill to swallow. He’s had five top-10s this season, and now has 17 top-10s since winning his 13th PGA TOUR event back in March 2016.

He tried to find the positives, like the fact he led the field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and Strokes Gained: Approach. With the U.S. Open his next stop he was encouraged. And as such will keep the momentum by heading straight to Pebble Beach for a week’s extra practice on the venue.

“It's tough on the PGA TOUR. If you don’t get to 20 under, don't think about winning,” Scott, who moved to 15th in the FedExCup said.

“It's disappointing not to win, for sure. I really played good golf this week, and it just wasn't good enough. So I've just got to be a little bit better.

“But I'm very happy with where things are at. It's just going to make me hungrier for two weeks' time now, and it's a good time to be playing well.”

For Kaymer, who started with the 54-hole lead and four ahead of Cantlay, it is now coming up on five years without a win.

He will always have his two majors and PLAYERS Championship to be proud of, but on Sunday three bogeys in the final seven holes dropped him to third place. He moves to 120th in the FedExCup.

“I played good golf all week. I just didn't make as many putts today,” Kaymer said.

“To shoot level par today wasn’t my greatest round, but overall I'm very happy the way I play golf, and especially now for the next few weeks coming up.”

And for Spieth it was another week of promising signs that ultimately wasn’t quite good enough. His T7 finish was the third top-10 in a row after going over 10 months without one. But he still hasn’t won since July 2017. Spieth moves to 65th in the FedExCup.

He ranked second in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green and 10th Off-the-Tee and Putting. His approach game let him down, where he lost over three shots to the field average.

“I wasn't necessarily trying to win today, I was trying to just go out and shoot a number, and if it was good enough, great.” Spieth said.

“I wasn't really going to do much scoreboard watching, and I didn't. I thought it was a good, solid week, just needed some better wedges out of the fairways, and kind of par-3 game. When I hit fairways, it needs to be tightened up. That was the difference for me this week for having a chance to win today.”
