First look: Callaway creates special edition Mack Daddy 4 Tactical wedge

    Written by Jonathan Wall @jonathanrwall

The latest collaboration between chief club designer Roger Cleveland, Callaway's Tour staff and R&D, Mack Daddy 4 Tactical features a new PVD finish, black PVD face and four black weight ports, as well as a limited edition True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S200 black shaft and Lamkin "Tactical" grip.

A portion of the proceeds from each Mack Daddy 4 Tactical wedge will be donated to the Birdies For The Brave Foundation, a national military outreach initiative.

From a spec standpoint, the Tactical offering is identical to the standard version that was released earlier this year. The wedge features a straighter leading edge and smaller, more compact head similar to what's found on Mack Daddy 2.

The straighter leading edge is somewhere between Mack Daddy Forged and MD3 and offers a tighter leading-edge radius that makes it easier to produce clean contract on tight lies.

All main grooves on the face are horizontal milled and saw-cut to strict tolerances. The 16-groove configuration includes a "Nip-It" groove near the leading edge designed to improve spin on short shots.

The lower lofted wedges (52 degrees and below) have a 20D groove for controlled spin on full shots. while the higher lofted wedges (54 degrees and above) employ a more aggressive 5D groove that increases spin out of the rough and around the green.

A Micro-Positive surface texture pattern was also milled into the flat parts of the face to increase the contact points between cover and groove. Three raised "micro ridges" expand the length of the hitting area by grabbing the ball's cover at 84 different contact points to generate more spin on a variety of shots.

The wedge comes in two grind options: S and X. The X features a narrow, high-bounce crescent sole. With the low point near the front of the sole, it's a preferred option for players who have a moderate-to-steep attack angle on medium-to-soft course conditions.

The "standard" S-Grind has slight camber, moderate heel relief and straight leading edge. It's a conventional wedge that performs well in all conditions.

Callaway's Mack Daddy 4 Tactical retails for $180 per wedge and will be available Sept. 21 in six lofts (50, 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60 degrees).
