Winner's Bag: Justin Rose, WGC-HSBC Champions

Justin Rose's world-class victory at HSBC Champions

Justin Rose mounted the third-largest final-round comeback in PGA TOUR history, coming from eight shots back to win the WGC-HSBC Champions. The historic round was keyed by a back-nine 31 that featured five birdies, including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 that gave Rose a lead he would never relinquish.

For Rose, the most important shot of the week came on the par-3 17th with a TaylorMade P730 "Rose Proto" 5-iron in his hands. With the wind blowing directly into his face, Rose laced a tee shot that climbed into the wind and landed some three feet behind the hole for a tap-in birdie.

"We were playing into what we felt was like a ten-mile-an-hour wind, or what we gauged a ten-mile-an-hour wind to be, and it just fit perfectly for our 5-iron," Rose said. "I knew I had to hit a 5-iron climbing up into the breeze. It wasn't a 5-iron I was trying to trap. I was trying to let the wind hold it up."

Rose played an integral role in the design of TaylorMade's P730, the company's first traditional muscleback model since Tour Preferred MB was introduced in 2014. From a shaping standpoint, the overall blade profile was made smaller with cleaner, crisper lines, particularly in the 7-8-9 iron transition.

The inertia was raised slightly in the vertical direction (IXX) without increasing it in the horizontal direction (IZZ). This was achieved by reducing the overall blade length and adding a milled channel in the back of the head to move mass away from the center of the blade.

Rose also made a putter change in China, swapping TaylorMade's TP Red Chaska for TP Red Ardmore 2 — the same wing-back model Jason Day had in the bag until last week. The wings in the back of the head add stability, while a 6061 aluminum and polymer-grooved Pure Roll face insert combines soft feel with 45-degree grooves to promote a better forward roll that reduces skidding.
