Justin Thomas won for the sixth time in the last year with a sudden-death playoff victory over Marc Leishman at THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES.
The defining shot of the tournament came on the last hole of regulation with Thomas needing at least a birdie to force a playoff. Thomas pulled a 15-degree Titleist 917F2 fairway wood from 243 yards and watched as the ball cleared the water and came to rest just short of the green. Thomas would go on to get up-and-down for birdie.
Thomas transitioned into the 917F2 fairway wood around the midway point of last season when he swapped Titleist's 917D3 driver for 917D2.
"I wasn't driving it well and knew that 917D2 went farther and was faster," Thomas told PGATOUR.COM. "At that point I was thinking, if I'm going to drive it crooked and be in the rough, I may as well hit it a little bit farther (laughs). I knew that I needed to work a lot on my swing and my driving. I figured if I was going to start over with my driving, I may as well do the same with a driver that has perfect launch conditions for me."
The larger profile F2 (179cc) offers more spin and a higher launch versus 917F3. The club features the company's Active Recoil Channel and SureFit CG in the sole, and a VFT (variable face thickness) insert that protects ball speeds on off-center strikes.
