Justin Thomas cards birdie coming down the stretch at the TOUR Championship
A runner-up finish at the TOUR Championship was good enough for Justin Thomas to secure the season-long FedExCup title at East Lake Golf Club.
Thomas ranked second in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green with a mixed set of Titleist irons that includes 716 CB (4-iron), 718 MB (5-9), and a 46-degree Vokey SM6 pitching.
A traditional muscleback player, Thomas had no problem adding the newest MB version to the bag the first week it was available at Quicken Loans National. What makes Thomas' irons unique from the retail version is that they have absolutely no offset — a personal tweak he started requesting five years ago after picking up a set that had a similar look at address.
"It was really a 30-minute process," Thomas told PGATOUR.COM of the iron switch. "Ask anyone from Titleist and they'll tell you it was a very easy transition. I hit some 5- and 8-irons on TrackMan and looked at the launch and flight — could I hit draws, fades, low, high. I'm not necessarily looking for one particular shot, I want to make sure they check every box. Once they were good to go, I just pulled my old set out of the bag and threw the new set in."
Thomas also prefers the look and performance of a Vokey pitching wedge to that of the stock version typically found in an iron set. Thomas' wedge features Vokey's F grind and 10 degrees of bounce.
"The big reason why I like the Vokey pitching wedge is because with an iron you can get jumpers out of the rough," Thomas said. "With that Vokey and the grooves it has, I'm able to control the approach shots more. I know when I'm in the rough and have 140 yards, I don't have to worry about the pitching wedge flying 155 yards and getting a jumper. I know I'm going to be able to get the correct amount of spin and hit my numbers better."
