Many golf fans became aware of Billy Horschel’s sartorial swagger at the 2013 U.S. Open when he slipped on a pair of octopus-printed trousers for the final round at Merion. Now, that same print is making a comeback as part of a special five-outfit collection that Horschel created with the design team at Ralph Lauren. The 2014 FedExCup Champion will debut the RLX x Billy Horschel Collection at the 2018 PGA Championship in August.
This time around, the octopus print will be showcased in a slightly different colorway and Horschel will wear the pattern on a pair of shorts for Wednesday’s practice round. (Remember, players are now permitted to wear shorts during the practice rounds at the PGA Championship.)
The RLX x Billy Horschel Collection is the first golf design collaboration for Ralph Lauren, and Horschel was an obvious collaborator for the brand. Not only has he been a brand ambassador since 2011, but he has established himself as one of the best-dressed players in the game. If you think this is an example of a PGA TOUR player slapping his name on a few shirts, guess again. Horschel was involved in the design process from start to finish. He worked with the design team on everything from fabrics and colors to designs and fits. The result is a robust collection that captures Horschel’s bold, yet sophisticated style.
“I am extremely proud of this collaboration with my long-time apparel partner Ralph Lauren. This collection integrates both my passion for golf and fashion with the sophisticated elements of the RLX Golf brand,” said Horschel.
The collection features a range of polos, knitwear, layering pieces, outerwear, pants, and shorts. Statement patterns, like the octopus print and a modern camo pattern, are blended with a playful color palette of bright blue, pink and neutral accents. Horschel has always favored slimmer fits and performance fabrics, and the five-pocket trousers and an array of high-tech materials in the collection align with his preferences.
For Wednesday’s practice round, Horschel will pair the octopus short with a solid Bermuda Blue polo fabricated from a technical pique. The opening round will see the five-time PGA TOUR winner in preppy French Navy and Exotic Pink stripes with a White trouser. A matching French Navy windbreaker with a contrasting pink full-length zipper will provide a lightweight layer of warmth if needed. Horschel will certainly turn heads on Friday in an edgy urban camo print pant. The solid White polo allows the pant to take center stage while the contrasting grey collar and placket sync perfectly with the print. The weekend looks are all about bright colors with Bermuda Blue and Exotic Pink pants on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Each of the pieces in the collection features a unique hangta highlighting the line’s sophisticated sensibility and high-performance fabrications. Horschel’s logo is found on the back yoke of the polos in the collection.
In addition to the men’s collection, a capsule comprised of skorts, polos, trousers, and pullovers is also available for women. The women’s pieces are grounded in the same color palette as the men’s and include the octopus and camo prints.
