adidas Golf is gearing up the United States Men's and Women's Olympic Teams for gold in Rio in a range of apparel that is patriotic, athletic and stylish. The All-American red, white, and blue color palette is strong and powerful, and the designs incorporate many of the hottest fashion trends to hit the fairways this year, including color blocking, graphical prints, and tonal stripes.
"We not only wanted to provide great designs but ... we wanted them to truly feel like athletes," said USA GOLF Executive Director Andy Levinson. "When you look at the final product, they really achieved that."
The sporty tops also feature two of adidas' most advanced fabric technologies – Climachill and Climacool. Climachill is adidas' top-shelf cooling technology where a solid high-tech fabric acts like a 360 degree ventilated mesh. Climacool, on the other hand, features panels of mesh in areas that require maximum ventilation.
Although adidas and USA GOLF first unveiled the uniforms at the PGA Merchandise Show in January of this year, the process actually began in 2012 when Levinson and TaylorMade-adidas President and CEO Golf David Abeles met under a tree at Augusta National during the Masters.
From there, Levinson consulted with a group of U.S. golfers and adidas worked with some of its athletes to arrive at the final designs. Then in March of this year, measurements were taken and kits were created for the top 10 American players. Now that the teams have been finalized, adidas has shipped the uniforms for the four men and three women to a U.S. Olympic Committee shipping hub where they will, in turn, be delivered to Rio along with the uniforms for athletes in other sports.
Replica versions of Team USA's uniforms are available for purchase at retail. How are the replica and authentic pieces different? Quite simply, the replica pieces feature adidas' three-stripes logo in gold, but the actual apparel worn in Rio will be void of branding due to Olympic restrictions on logos.
The men tee it up at the Olympic Golf Course in classic looks with modern details. The contrasting placket and tipped sleeves are throwbacks to the Golden Era of the game, while the gradient print at the shoulder is distinctly modern. Each day, the men complete their looks with adidas' Ultimate pant – a high-tech trouser constructed from a lightweight, 4-way stretch, quick-dry fabric with mesh pockets, a flexible waistband, and a modern cut. The tonal belts each day create smooth looks from top to bottom.
The women kick off their competition in Rio in a clean-looking outfit consisting of a white collarless shirt and navy blue bottoms. Both the top and the bottoms are adorned with Brazilian lace, a common design element throughout the women's script. The use of Brazilian lace not only adds a feminine look, but it also serves as a tip of the cap to the host country. The women also have a variety of apparel options. On a daily basis, they can choose two styles of tops (with sleeves or sleeveless), two styles of bottoms (a skirt or shorts), or a dress.
Both the men's and women's squads will complete their looks every day with a team hat constructed of lightweight and breathable moisture-wicking fabric.
The second round sees the men outfitted in a bold polo shirt that incorporates color blocking and tonal gradient stripes that run horizontally across the shirt. The solid navy bottoms offer a nice balance with the aggressive design of the top.
The women are pairing a color-blocked top with red and navy blue lace bottoms for a modern and athletic look.
The men receive their cleanest look of the week with a white and navy blue color blocked polo that pairs perfectly with the navy trousers. The red collar and two-tone piping on the sleeves add a pop of personality.
The women make a bold statement on Moving Day with a power red top that features a navy blue star lace pattern at the shoulders with matching trim. The scripted skirt for Saturday incorporates that same star lace pattern around the back.
The men break out their most patriotic look of the week with a polo shirt that features an American flag motif. The tonal nature of the stars and bars graphic offers a bold, yet understated look.
For the women, the lace color blocked top returns from the second round. This time, it is paired with a navy and red lace skirt for a sporty and modern final round look.
Although individual players will be responsible for their own footwear, adidas has created Olympic-inspired colorways of its top of the line TOUR360 BOOST shoe. Premium leather styles are available in white/red/blue and white/gold/silver/bronze colorways, while a third option with the brand's Primeknit upper in a black/gold/silver/bronze colorway is also available retail.
