Not unlike starting pitchers who look first at the flags at Wrigley Field to determine which way the wind is blowing on the day they take the bump, the elements throughout the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am dictate how each of the three courses in the rotation should be approached by those in the field, fans and fantasy gamers.
Regardless of the direction of the wind, hurlers' plans of attack are influenced when flags are stiff on the North Side of Chicago. Contrarily, when Mother Nature cooperates, it's just another beautiful day at the ballpark. The latter is what's in store in all three arenas on the Monterey Peninsula all week. The weather is going to be perfect.
For more on how Pebble Beach, Monterey Peninsula Country Club's Shore Course and Spyglass Hill are expected to score for this week's field of 156, scroll beneath the ranking.
Adam Scott, Kevin Kisner, Bubba Watson and Patrick Cantlay will be among the notables covered in Tuesday's Fantasy Insider.
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is the last of four events this season contested over multiple courses. The host track and Spyglass Hill are stock par 72s, while MPCC is a par 34-37=71 with five par 3s. None reaches 7,000 yards.
Sunshine will cover the area during all four rounds. Daytime temperature will extend into the upper 60s and maybe touch 70 degrees. Winds will be light to moderate. In short, because it's the opposite forecast of last year's wind and rain, we can ignore that course data. For a responsible comp, we retreat to 2015.
In sublime conditions, MPCC is most vulnerable. It surrendered a scoring average of 68.936 (-2.064 strokes to par) three years ago. Pebble Beach averaged 70.241 (-1.759) and Spy checked in at 71.199 (-0.801). Suffice it to say that with this week's deep field, Brandt Snedeker's tournament record of 22-under 265 in 2015 is in jeopardy.
After every golfer completes one round on each course, the scheduled 54-hole cut will award FedExCup points and earnings to the low 70 and ties, but only the low 60 and ties will play the final round at Pebble Beach. The low 25 pro-am teams at the same juncture will also tee it up in the finale on Pebble, even if the pro missed the cut in the official individual competition.
