Tiger Woods' run once again spoiled by double bogey at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide

Tiger Woods sticks tee shot to set up birdie at the Memorial

DUBLIN, Ohio – Tiger Woods had the crowds at Muirfield Village in early rapture as the five-time Memorial Tournament Presented by Nationwide champion cashed in four birdies in his opening seven holes.

They were hoping for an epic run.

It started with a hole out from a bunker on the first. An approach to tap-in range on the third. Birdies on both of the par-5s.

And then, just as it had a day earlier, a double bogey stole away all the momentum.

Woods was within three shots of the lead when his tee shot on the par-4 10th found a fairway bunker. After his next shot, he was still in there.

“I clipped the lip and up against my footprint …,” Woods said in disdain afterward.

His third was a chip out, and after getting it on the surface a two-putt left him with a double bogey six.

The 81-time PGA TOUR winners’ luck had run out. And his good shots the rest of the way went largely unrewarded. He settled for a two-under 70 that left him at four under for the week and well out of contention for a sixth title at Muirfield Village.

Woods had a similar run going on Friday before a double bogey on the 15th hole.

“I'd never seen a round that lipped out more shots than today. Six lip-outs or seven lip-outs today. It was unreal,” Woods said.

“That was the highest round I could possibly have shot today. I had it going, I was playing well. The wind was a little bit tricky, but I was hitting it flush enough where I was getting through the wind. As I said, I got nothing out of the round today.”

With a record tying 82nd TOUR win beyond him Woods is looking for momentum on Sunday as he prepares for the upcoming U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open at the venue and has also claimed the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am there the same year.

“I'm so far back, and there's too many guys I'm not going to win the golf tournament,” he admitted.

“But hopefully I go out and play a positive round of golf tomorrow and get something out of my round like I haven't done the first three days and get some positive momentum going into the [U.S.] Open.”
