Tiger discusses his opening round at Genesis Open
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Tiger Woods shot a rollercoaster 1-over 72 in Thursday's opening round of the Genesis Open. It was Tiger's first competitive round at Riviera in 12 years.
Woods made five birdies against four bogeys and an early double bogey on his second hole. He was at even par after a birdie on the par-4 1st (his 10th hole of the day) but suffered two bogeys before his final birdie at the par-4 eighth (his 17th hole).
"I made really silly bogeys out there, in particular No. 7 there, it was not very good from the middle of the fairway," Woods said. "But overall I thought I hung in there well and grinded. Hit a bad tee shot on 11 and the tree kept it. And I got to 2-over par early and I fought back to even par and lost one there at 7."
Woods struggled with his driver off the tee early on, hitting several wayward shots although he ended up hitting 8 of 14 fairways. He hit just 7 of 18 greens.
Tiger's playing partners were Justin Thomas, who shot a 2-under 69, and Rory McIlroy, who finished at even par.
"He hit some great drives coming in," McIlroy said of Woods. "He drove it much better."
Replied Thomas when asked about Woods: "He got around 1 over on a pretty tough golf course. So I think when he was really playing and not on all the time off, today's round could have been a 1 or 2 under. But he hung in there pretty well, all of us did today."
Woods is making his 12th start in this event, and first since 2006. In his 10 previous appearances at Riviera, his best finish is a T-2. It's the course in which he's made the most starts in his career without a TOUR win.
Rd. 1: Tiger Woods hole-by-hole
10 (par 4, 309 yards): Smart play by Tiger to lay up left short of the bunker. He follows with a terrific wedge shot from 87 yards that finishes 9 feet, 1 inch from the hole. Solid birdie putt to get his round going. Score: 1 under.
11 (par 5, 589 yards): Tiger's first use of driver does not go well. His tee shot sails right into the trees, and he fails to find the ball; not sure if it was lost in the trees or the high grass. After taking a penalty shot, he retees and finds the fairway, then lays up with his next shot. His pitch from 97 yards finishes inside 10 feet, but he fails to drain the putt, and has to tap in for double bogey 7. Score: 1 over.
12 (par 4, 475 yards): Another poor tee shot that sails right into the trees and drops into the primary rough. Left with a tricky approach shot, Tiger tries to curve it around the trees and finds the bottom of the front greenside bunker. His third shot rolls off the green, and he opts to use putter from 42 feet, 4 inches. He taps in for bogey. Score: 2 over.
13 (par 4, 450 yards): Tiger opts for 3-wood off the tee, and this time safely finds the fairway -- 320 yards away. Might be seeing more of that club the rest of the way. His approach from 130 yards leaves him a birdie putt of 14 feet, 2 inches, and he drains it for birdie. Score: 1 over.
14 (par 3, 183 yards): A 7-iron tee shot finds the back of a shallow green, and he follows with two putts from 38 feet, 10 inches for his first par of the round.
15 (par 4, 481 yards): Another driver, another tee shot that sails right into the eucalyptus trees, as he finds the primary rough short of the fairway bunker. His approach from 214 yards does well to find the fringe almost 56 feet from the pin. Opting to putt, Tiger's gall finds the swale of the green and drifts away from the pin. His par putt from 15 feet clips the left edge of the cup, leaving a tap-in for bogey. Score: 2 over.
16 (par 3, 162 yards): Tiger's tee shot finds the bunker, short right of the green. He does well with an awkward lie near the back lip, splashing out to inside 6 feet. His par putt circles the lip and drops in.
17 (par 5, 608 yards): Finally! Tiger's driver finds the fairway down the left side. He lays up short of the bunker on his second shot. From 100 yards, he hits a nifty wedge to 5 feet, then drains the birdie. Score: 1 over
18 (par 4, 478 yards): Tee shots finds the fairway, and his approach from 197 yards finishes in the rough left of the green. He gets up-and-down for par, making his putt from 7 feet.
1 (par 5, 498 yards): Using 3-wood off the tee, his drive goes 301 yards. His second shot finishes in the back of the green, 46-1/2 feet from the hole. Two putts from there for birdie, his final putt from 7 feet, 8 inches. Score: Even.
2 (par 4, 475 yards): Misses his tee shot left into the primary rough (317-yard drive). Gets a free drop, then hits his approach to 33 feet, where he two-putts for par.
3 (par 4, 446 yards): Tee shot of 333 yards finds the fairway, leaving him just a flip wedge in. But he skies it past the pin into primary rough behind the green. A nice chip sets up his par putt from 2-1/2 feet.
4 (par 3, 230 yards): Tee shot lands in the primary rough between the bunker and the green. Nice touch on the 72-foot chip sets up his par putt from 4 feet, the ball sneaking in on the right side.
5 (par 4, 414 yards): Using iron off the tee -- the end of the fairway is 295 yards -- Tiger's drive sails into the native area well left of the fairway. He's not happy. "A smother-over-the-top swing," said PGA TOUR LIVE's John Rollins. In tall grass, Tiger does well to muscle out his second shot into the fairway, 53 yards from the pin. His third shot finishes 17-1/2 feet past the pin, leaving him dissatisifed. Two putts for bogey. Score: 1 over.
6 (par 3, 181 yards): Tee shot finds the area between the front bunker and the green. He uses putter from off the green and two-putts from 39-1/2 feet to secure his par.
7 (par 4, 394 yards): Tee shot with iron finds the fairway. But his approach shot from 137 yards drifts to the left, not a good place to be on this hole. He opts for putter off the green from 48-1/2 fee and rolls 9-1/2 feet past. His par putt hits the lip and spins out, leaving him with bogey. Score: 2 over.
8 (par 4, 433 yards): Tiger opts for driver to go down left side of the split-fairway hole. Perfect 319-yard tee shot. Beautiful approach to 4 feet to set up birdie. Score: 1 over.
9 (par 4, 464 yards): His final drive of the round is not a good one -- it sails way right into a bunker that's on the 10th hole. His approach from 163 yards comes out low and runs past the hole, ending up in the fringe. Two putts for a finishing par. Score: 1-over 72
