PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. – Out of action due to injury since August 2015, Tiger Woods will return to PGA TOUR competition next week at the Safeway Open, the first event of the 2016-17 PGA TOUR Season. Woods officially committed today to the event, October 10-16 at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California. Woods has 14 career TOUR victories in the state of California and finished tied for 30th in his lone previous start at the Safeway Open in 2011.
In his career, Woods has 79 PGA TOUR titles, second all-time to Sam Snead’s 82, with 14 of those victories being major championships. He also spent a record 683 weeks at No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking between 1997 and 2014. The two-time FedExCup champion’s last win came at the 2013 World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, one of five titles that season that saw him earn PGA TOUR Player of the Year honors for the 11th time.
Woods did not play on TOUR in 2015-16 and was limited to 11 starts during the 2014-15 season due to injury. During the 2014-15 season, he was sidelined after withdrawing from the Farmers Insurance Open in early February until the Masters Tournament in April. His lone top 10 that season came in his last PGA TOUR start at the Wyndham Championship in August 2015, where he held a share of the 36-hole lead before ultimately finishing tied for 10th. Shortly after, Woods underwent microdiscectomy surgery.
Woods announced a follow-up procedure in October 2015, his third surgery in 20 months. Since that time, Woods has been rehabilitating and practicing in anticipation of his return. He also served as a vice-captain for the victorious U.S. Ryder Cup Team last week at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.
Earlier this week, U.S. Presidents Cup Captain Steve Stricker named Woods as one of three captain’s assistants for the 2017 Presidents Cup along with Davis Love III and Fred Couples.
