The commitment deadline for THE PLAYERS Championship has passed, though two players could still earn entry into the event.
J.B. Holmes needs to earn just eight points in this week’s Wells Fargo Championship to match the top 125 FedExCup points from 2013 and qualify for THE PLAYERS due to his Major Medical Extension (left ankle fracture in March 2013). A solo 63rd-place finish is worth eight FedExCup points. Holmes was inside the top 10 halfway through his second round. The winner of this week's Wells Fargo Championship, if not otherwise exempt, will be added to THE PLAYERS field.
Tiger Woods will not be in the field at this year’s PLAYERS Championship due to a back injury. Woods is the third defending champion in tournament history unable to return due to injury, joining Jerry Pate (1983) and Steve Elkington (1998). Matt Kuchar, the 2012 champion, is one of eight former PLAYERS winners in this year's field. K.J. Choi (2011), Tim Clark (2010), Henrik Stenson (2009), Sergio Garcia (2008), Phil Mickelson (2007), Adam Scott (2004) and Justin Leonard (1998) also are scheduled to compete.
Twenty-nine of the top 30 in the current FedExCup standings are currently in the field, as are 27 of the top 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking.·Multiple winners Jimmy Walker (three wins in 2013-14), Bubba Watson (two) and Patrick Reed (two) also are in the field; they are Nos. 1, 2 and 4 in the FedExCup standings, respectively. Watson will be making his first start since winning his second Masters title. Kuchar, the 2012 PLAYERS champ, is third in the FedExCup standings.
THE PLAYERS Championship’s 144-man field is filled by the highest-ranked players in the FedExCup standings as of April 27 not otherwise exempt for the tournament. Will MacKenzie (15th in the FedExCup), Russell Knox (27) and Ryo Ishikawa (29) were the final players in the field as of Friday. Ishikawa will become the first alternate if one player – either Holmes or the Wells Fargo champion – is added to the PLAYERS field. Knox will become first alternate and Ishikawa will be the second alternate if both Holmes and the Wells Fargo champion are added to the field at TPC Sawgrass.
