Here’s a look at each match, along with our staff predictions from onsite writers Ben Everill and Mike McAllister.
LOUIS OOSTHUIZEN/ADAM SCOTT (INTERNATIONAL) vs. DUSTIN JOHNSON/MATT KUCHAR (USA), 7:02 p.m. ET
Overview: Scott (with Byeong Hun An) and Oosthuizen (with Abraham Ancer) each won their Four-Ball matches. Now the two senior International players, among the game’s best ball-strikers, get together for Foursomes for the first time in their Presidents Cup careers. It’s the most decorated pairing Ernie Els can send out. Meanwhile, Johnson will hope to avenge the 4 and 3 Four-Balls loss he suffered with Gary Woodland to Oosthuizen/Ancer. He gets the steady Kuchar, who sat out Thursday. This is not a new pairing – Johnson/Kuchar won two matches at Liberty National and also tied a match here in 2011. Johnson has never lost a Foursomes match in the Presidents Cup.
Player records: Oosthuizen (8-5-3 overall, 3-2-1 in Foursomes; Scott (15-20-5 overall, 7-8-2 in Foursomes); Johnson (8-5-2 overall, 5-0-1 in Foursomes); Kuchar (6-8-2 overall, 3-3-2 overall).
Ben Everill’s prediction: Internationals 3 and 2. I'm not convinced Johnson has the touch dialed in after lengthy lay off and he's up against the veteran Internationals with a point to prove.
Mike McAllister’s prediction: Internationals, 1 up. DJ will be more competitive on Friday, and Kuchar offers more experience than Woodland. But this International superpairing will be slightly better.
MATCH 7
ADAM HADWIN/ JOAQUIN NIEMANN (INTERNATIONAL) vs. XANDER SCHAUFFELE/PATRICK CANTLAY (USA), 7:15 p.m. ET
Overview: Hadwin (with Sungjae Im) won his Four-Balls match while Niemann lost with Marc Leishman to Tiger Woods-Justin Thomas. Niemann showed some nervousness early as a Presidents Cup rookie and made just one birdie. Hadwin and Niemann each ranked outside the top 100 in Strokes Gained: Around the Green last season, so that could be a factor. Schauffele and Cantlay pair up for the second consecutive day after losing to Hadwin and Im, 1 up, in a match that was tied after 15 holes.
Player records: Hadwin (1-2-1 overall, 0-1-0 in Foursomes), Niemann (0-1-0 overall; 0-0-0 in Foursomes); Cantlay (0-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 in Foursomes); Schauffele (0-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 in Foursomes).
Ben Everill’s prediction: USA 1 up. Niemann was a little wild on Thursday and you cannot afford that in Foursomes play. This will be a chance for some red on the board.
Mike McAllister’s prediction: USA, 2 and 1. Cantlay and Schauffele are probably a more effective combo in Foursomes than Four-Balls.
MATCH 8
MARC LEISHMAN/ABRAHAM ANCER (INTERNATIONAL) vs. WEBB SIMPSON/PATRICK REED (USA), 7:28 p.m. ET
Overview: Leishman lost his Four-Balls match with Joaquin Niemann while Ancer won his with Louis Oosthuizen. Leishman played well at times on Thursday, and Ancer’s length off the tee will fill in one of his few statistical deficiencies. Simpson and Reed lost their Four-Balls match to Hideki Matsuyama/C.T. Pan, 1 up, but had the match tied after 16 holes. Simpson was the highest-ranked Strokes Gained: Putting performer of the four players last season, so if Reed can set him up, Simpson should deliver. Reed won both of his Foursomes matches two years ago with Jordan Spieth.
Player records: Leishman (3-8-3 overall, 1-3-2 in Foursomes); Ancer (1-0-0 overall, 0-0-0 in Foursomes); Simpson (5-4-2 overal; 3-1-0 in Foursomes); Reed (4-4-2 overall, 2-2-0 in Foursomes).
Ben Everill’s prediction: Internationals 1 up. Leishman is not about to let this party go on without his significant input. With the steady Ancer and his course knowledge they'll prevail in a close one.
Mike McAllister’s prediction: USA, 1 up. As long as Reed can deal with the noise coming from a gallery full of Australians rooting for Leishman, the Americans will be just fine.
MATCH 9
BYEONG HUN AN/HIDEKI MATSUYAMA (INTERNATIONAL) vs. JUSTIN THOMAS/TIGER WOODS (USA), 7:41 p.m. ET
Overview: The Woods-Thomas duo provided the only point for the Americans on Thursday, and Woods intimated that he might not have gone out for Foursomes on Friday had the USA not fallen behind. Matsuyama (with C.T. Pan) and An (with Adam Scott) each won their Four-Balls match. Matsuyama ranked 97th in Strokes Gained: Putting last season, while An ranked 182nd, but Els doesn’t seem too worried about any issues on the green. Meanwhile, Thomas will look to ramp up his contributions after Woods carried them on Thursday. Of Woods’ 25 career match wins in the Presidents Cup, 11 of have come in Foursomes. If he wins again Friday, he will tie Phil Mickelson for most wins in Presidents Cup history.
Player records: An (1-0-0 overall, 0-0-0 in Foursomes); Matsuyama (5-6-3 overall, 1-3-1 in Foursomes); Thomas (4-1-1 overall, 1-0-1 in Foursomes); Woods (25-15-1 overall, 11-4-1 in Foursomes).
Ben Everill’s prediction: USA 2 up. Woods and Thomas were dominant Thursday. They'll be hard to stop again.
Mike McAllister’s prediction: USA, 3 and 2. Woods knows his team is in a battle now. The captain won’t let his team down.
MATCH 10
SUNGJAE IM/CAMERON SMITH (INTERNATIONAL) vs. GARY WOODLAND/RICKIE FOWLER (USA), 7:54 p.m. ET
Overview: Im (with Adam Hadwin) won his Four-Balls match while Smith surprisingly sat out on the opening day. The Australian is now desperate to get out on the course and prove his worth to captain Els and with Im he has a steady partner. Woodland suffered a heavy defeat with Dustin Johnson in Four-Balls against Louis Oosthuizen and Abraham Ancer and needs to regroup fast. Fowler, like Smith, gets his first start after resting.
Player records: Im (1-0-0 overall, 0-0-0 in Foursomes), Smith (0-0-0 overall; 0-0-0 in Foursomes); Woodland (0-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 in Foursomes); Fowler (4-3-1 overall, 2-1-1 in Foursomes).
Ben Everill’s prediction: Internationals 1 up. Cameron Smith is itching to get out there in front of his home crowd and Im is a machine.
Mike McAllister’s prediction: USA, 1 up. Adding Fowler as a replacement for the injured Brooks Koepka pays immediate dividends.
