Monday Qualifiers: The Honda Classic

If this week’s Monday qualifiers need any inspiration, they can look to Kenny Knox. Thirty-three years ago, he Monday qualified for The Honda Classic and went on to win the tournament.
It was a crazy week for Knox. He won despite shooting 80 in the third round, when high winds howled across the course and led to a scoring average of 79.3. The Honda was Knox’s first start of the season. He’d played three seasons on the PGA TOUR but was never able to keep his card.
He had one top-10 in 80 starts before the Honda, earning slightly more than $52,000.
“I’ve been broke a lot,” Knox said after accepting the $90,000 winner’s check. In the final round, Knox chipped in on No. 3, sank a 40-footer on 4 and holed out a bunker shot (for bogey!) on 7.
“The hole just kept getting in the way,” he said.
Only two Monday qualifiers have won since: Fred Wadsworth at the 1986 Southern Open and Arjun Atwal at the 2010 Wyndham Championship.
Two of this week’s qualifiers have had past success at The Honda Classic. Erik Compton finished fourth at PGA National in 2013, while Blayne Barber placed third three years later.
Barber had to wait until Tuesday to earn his spot at The Honda Classic, after making eagle on the fourth playoff hole. One hole earlier, David Pastore made an eagle to earn his way into this week’s PGA TOUR event. There were seven participants in the playoff for the final two spots.
Here’s a closer look at the players who advanced out of Monday’s qualifier at Banyan Cay Resort.
