Wilson introduces new D7 drivers, fairway woods, hybrids

Wilson’s new D7 drivers, fairway woods and hybrids are built with a lighter design than other offerings on the equipment market, and they’re designed for higher ball speeds as well as more playability, according to the company.

The driver clubs heads, which weigh 192 grams, have a carbon fiber composite crown with a layer of Dupont Kevlar to reduce vibrations, and thus improve sound and feel. According to Jon Pergrande, Global Innovation Manager at Wilson, said the process of designing the driver actually started by “stripping out” 25 grams of weight, which was “strategically returned to the head with the goal of improving sound of the driver and optimizing ball flight …”

The D7 drivers also have an internal weighting system that’s designed for golfers with different swing speeds, according to the company. The 9-degree head, designed for faster swingers, has weight positioned forward for a lower launch and lower spin. The 10.5-degree head is designed for “moderate-to-fast” swingers and has internal weight in the middle of the head for higher launch spin, while the 13-degree head is designed for “slow-to-moderate” swingers with weight in the rear portion of the head for higher launch and spin.

The D7 fairway woods and hybrids, with 455 carpenter steel faces, have also been constructed lighter. According to Wilson, thin-cast pockets have reduced 5 grams of weight in each head. Pergrande says with the lighter weights, the new fairways and hybrids “can be swung faster with the same effort to give golfers the desired distance.”

The fairway woods come in three lofts (15, 18 and 21 degrees) and the hybrids come in four lofts (19, 22, 25 and 28 degrees, with the 28-degree option being right-handed only).

All of Wilson new D7 products will be available on Jan. 21; the drivers (UST Mamiya Helium series shafts) will sell for $299.99 each, the fairway woods (UST Mamiya Helium Series shafts) will sell for $199.99 each, and the hybrids (UST Mamiya Recoil shafts) will sell for $179.99 each. Wilson’s D7 driver comes stock with UST Mamiya Helium Series shafts.
