Style Insider: Puma kicks it old school

  • Puma introduced a spin on an old classic with the Suede G shoe. Puma introduced a spin on an old classic with the Suede G shoe.

The Puma Suede is one of the most iconic shoes in the sneaker game. Over the past 50 years, the Suede has influenced street style and transcended generations and cultures with its cool vibe.

United States track star Tommy Smith debuted the Puma Suede at the 1968 Olympic Games. At the time, it became a symbol of rebellion for a new generation of iconoclasts. In the ‘70s, the shoe gained street cred on the playgrounds of New York thanks to legendary Knicks’ point guard Walt “Clyde” Frazier. Frazier had a silky smooth game on the courts and a bold approach to fashion off of it. In 1973, Puma signed Frazier to an endorsement deal and created a wider version of the Suede for him called the Clyde. As a result, Frazier became the first professional basketball player to have a shoe named after him.

A different group of celebrity endorsers emerged for the Suede in the ‘80s as breakdancing crews like the NYC Breakers and Rock Steady Crew repped the shoe. Skateboarders and BMX freestylers found the Suede’s thick rubber outsole and sturdy upper to be perfect for cranking out tricks in the ‘90s. More recently, the shoe has been laced up by rappers such as Jay-Z and Meek Mill.

Now, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Suede, Puma Golf has created a golf-specific version of the shoe. The Suede G shoe pulls inspiration from the classic style of the original Suedes but includes an array of on-course features that allow it to move from the street to the fairways without missing a beat. The premium, waterproof, low-nap Suede upper provides protection against morning dew and summer showers, while the innovative hidden traction outsole offers the gripping power needed while swinging. For a refined look, Puma’s formstripe has been fabricated from a rich, microfiber leather.

“The Suede has been a street legend since day one. It’s clean, classic, comfortable, and now we’re excited to bring the same iconic look to the golf course,” said Grant Knudson, Head of Footwear & Accessories, Puma Golf. “The Suede G will celebrate the retro design of the original version, but incorporate traction and function that’s vital to a spikeless golf shoe. We’re excited to join Puma in this milestone celebration, and provide golfers with the same epic style that revolutionized the sneaker world 50 years ago.”

To complement the Suede G, Puma has launched a Throwback Collection of apparel and accessories. Taking inspiration from Puma’s original Dassler logo, the collection is a tribute to

Puma’s heritage and timeless style. Included in the collection are a polo, Corduroy tech trousers, ‘P’ caps, and a track jacket.

“The Throwback Collection is unlike anything you’ve ever seen in golf. It merges classic Puma style, taking inspiration from its throwback looks and original Dassler logo, with modern, game-changing performance fabrics that can seamlessly take you from the golf course to the office,” said Kristin Hinze, Global Head Golf Apparel, Puma Golf. “In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Suede, and the introduction of the iconic shoe to golf, we have built a timeless collection of apparel and accessories that beautifully and classically represents Puma’s rich heritage as the world’s leading sports and lifestyle brand.”
