Joe Skovron is back on a bag at this week’s Presidents Cup.
Skovron, who was Rickie Fowler’s longtime caddie before the pair split ahead of the FedExCup Playoffs, is caddying for the International Team’s Tom Kim, who at 20 years old will be the youngest player on either team this week at Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club. Kim qualified for the International Team after winning the Wyndham Championship, which also was the final event where Skovron caddied for Fowler.
Fowler and Skovron were one of the TOUR’s longest player-caddie partnership, pairing since Fowler turned pro in 2009. Skovron was on the bag for Fowler for three Presidents Cup and four Ryder Cup appearances. The first of Fowler’s five PGA TOUR wins came at Quail Hollow, site of this year’s Presidents Cup.
“Tom is excited to have Joe on his bag this week, not only because of his experience caddying in the game’s biggest events, but also because of his success at Quail Hollow,” Tom’s agent, Ben Harrison, told PGATOUR.COM.
Kim is the third-youngest player to ever compete in the Presidents Cup, behind only Ryo Ishikawa and Jordan Spieth, after an incredible summer that saw him go from being a PGA TOUR non-member to nearly qualifying for the TOUR Championship. Kim finished 32nd in the FedExCup after becoming the second-youngest TOUR winner since World War II (only Spieth was younger) and posting top-10s at the Rocket Mortgage Classic (7th) and Genesis Scottish Open (3rd). He is 22nd in the world ranking after beginning the year at No. 131.
Fowler and Skovron both grew up in the Temecula Valley region of Southern California, and Skovron’s parents, Joe and Valarie, ran the Valley Junior Golf Association where Fowler played some of his first tournaments. Skovron was a Division III All-American at La Verne before playing professionally. Skovron has not caddied on TOUR since the Wyndham Championship.
After earning the 125th and final spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, Fowler had Cobra rep Ben Schomin on the bag at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Fowler finished T6 at last week’s season-opening Fortinet Championship with new caddie Ricky Romano on the bag. Fowler also has recently returned to swing coach Butch Harmon.
