Scenarios to advancing to BMW Championship

Now that the 125 players have been determined for the FedExCup Playoffs, the next question becomes: Which players will advance from this week's THE NORTHERN TRUST to next week's BMW Championship?

The top 70 in points after this week's Playoffs opener at Liberty National will move on to Medinah and keep their hopes alive of winning the FedExCup title.

Keeping in mind that points are quadrupled for the first two Playoffs events, the latest projections indicate that 687 points will be needed to make the BMW Championship. Those projections are based on historical data and current season trends.

Entering this week, 61 players are above that projected threshold, from No. 1 Brooks Koepka (2,887 points) to No. 61 Ryan Moore (690 points). Since nothing is guaranteed, those 61 players are considered "likely" to advance ... although we'll go on a limb and say Koepka and the others near the top of the FedExCup list can go ahead and book their travel to Chicago.

If the projections hold, that leaves 64 players -- actually, 62, since outside-the-bubble players Henrik Stenson and Sam Burns are not in the field -- chasing nine spots at THE NORTHERN TRUST. Due to the new Playoffs format that has reduced the Playoffs tournaments from four to three, the 55 players being eliminated this week is the most in the 13-year history of the FedExCup Playoffs.

Here's a look at the 62 players in this week's field who have yet to reach that projected threshhold and what it will likely take to secure a top-70 spot. (Again, these are just projections and not definitive projections.)
