GREENSBORO, N.C. – Plenty is on the line at this week’s Wyndham Championship, with the top 125 in the FedExCup standings advancing to the Playoffs, as well as the finale of the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 competition and Aon Risk Reward Challenge. Here’s a quick look at each one after Saturday’s third round at Sedgefield Country Club.
FedExCup Update
AT STAKE: The 125 spots in the upcoming FedExCup Playoffs. Players who finish outside the top 125 after this week will see their seasons end.
LATEST PROJECTIONS: Four players – Patton Kizzire, Andrew Landry, Austin Cook and Shawn Stefani -- moved inside the top 125 after the third round. … This could be particularly important for Stefani, who does not have his card locked up for the 2019-20 season. (Kizzire is exempt through the 2020-21 campaign while Landry and Cook have their playing privileges through the end of next season). … Kizzire and Landy are tied for 10th and are projected at Nos. 117 and 120, respectively, in the FedExCup. Cook, who is tied for 25th, has improved two spots to No. 124 while Stefani, who started the week ranked 134th, is currently the man on the bubble at No. 125. … The players currently projected out of the top 125 are Sebastian Munoz, Pat Perez, Robert Streb and Alex Noren. … Munoz, who is tied for 46th, has dropped three spots to No. 126. Perez and Streb, who both missed the cut, are currently ranked Nos. 127 and 128, respectively. Noren, who came in as the bubble boy, is tied for 63 at Sedgefield and has dropped four spots in the FedExCup.
READY TO RUMBLE: Landry, who finished third at the John Deere Classic two weeks ago, starts the final round at 11 under and six strokes off the lead. He’s encouraged because his putter “kind of woke up” on Friday and was even more cooperative in the third round when he needed just 25. Landry, who won the Valero Texas Open last year, says his job security for next year will make things easier on Sunday as he chases a Playoff berth. “So, it's a win-win right now,” he said. “Obviously I would be sweating it a little bit more or be more of a pressure-packed day tomorrow if I didn't have that exemption, but I do. So, I'm just going to learn from this. If I ever have to do this in the future and just go out and have fun and play some good golf tomorrow and let it take care of itself.”
Wyndham Rewards Top 10
AT STAKE: The top 10 spots in the FedExCup standings and its bonus pool money of $10 million. Brooks Koepka already has wrapped up the top prize of $2 million.
LATEST PROJECTIONS: There were eight players who had a shot to move into the Top 10 at the start of the week. Webb Simpson, the 2011 Wyndham Championship winner who starts the final round one stroke behind Ben An and tied for second, is the only one currently projected to make a move. Simpson, who shot 65 on Saturday, stands ninth right now which knocks Justin Rose, who isn’t playing this week, down to No. 11. Click here to see the projections.
HEADING FOR HOME: Paul Casey is the only player who came to Sedgefield ranked among the Wyndham Rewards Top 10. He could rise as high as fourth with a victory. He’s currently tied for fifth, three strokes off the pace, and remains eighth in the Wyndham Rewards standings. He decided to come to Greensboro because he likes the concept of rewarding the regular season performance and wanted to improve his standing in the FedExCup. He also wanted to support the tournament because “they’ve been so good to me through the years.” On Monday, he’ll head home to Phoenix to see his family for the first time in four weeks and plans to return refreshed for the final two Playoff events. “It’s great because I can then give everything tomorrow, leave it all out on the golf course tomorrow,” Casey said. “I felt like I've done a really good job, had a really good stint on the road, and then, as you said, save the energy for … the BMW and then TOUR Championship. Because with our system, I think there's more volatility this year. I know the mathematicians say that's not the case, but I think they have no idea about what's going to happen at East Lake. So, it's exciting stuff. So, I was willing to sacrifice maybe a position or two because I really feel I need as much energy going into that TOUR Championship, and I'm 42, I can't play six in a row anymore.”
Aon Risk Reward Challenge
AT STAKE: The $1 million prize for the season-long competition involving the best scores at select holes. The par-5 15th at Sedgefield is the final hole, with Brooks Koepka currently ahead of Jason Day via a tiebreaker.
LATEST PROJECTIONS: The Aon Challenge ended on Saturday with Koepka, adding to his regular season bonus bounty. Jason Kokrak needed a double eagle and an eagle over the last two rounds to overtake him, but only made birdie at the 15th hole. Noren also made a birdie but needed double eagles on Saturday and Sunday.
