PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Two holes. Two pros. Approximately 30 minutes of action. Oh, and an early 8 a.m. start locally.
It would’ve been easy to sleep in Monday morning, but a sizable crowd lining the fairways and filling the stands made their way to Pebble Beach to watch Phil Mickelson complete his fifth career win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a three-stroke victory over playing partner Paul Casey.
Lee and his wife Lynne live in Palo Alto, California, about 90 miles away but had spent this week in the area, as they usually do during the tournament.
“I’ve been coming out here for 10 years and I’ve never been to a Monday finish, so this is something unique,” Lee said as they stood near the 17th tee, waiting for Mickelson and Casey to tee off.
Doug, meanwhile, lives two minutes away from Pebble Beach, so it was a bit easier for him to make it to the course.
“I wasn’t going to miss this for one day of sleeping in,” he said. “Paul’s played well but I’d love to see Phil win it today and come back in June and win it again (at the U.S. Open).”
George, whose family lives in nearby Carmel, lists Mickelson as his favorite golfer. He followed Phil for the entire 16 holes on Sunday as Mickelson overtook Casey for the lead. He didn’t want to miss the final two holes – even if it meant skipping class.
“School didn’t seem worth it,” George said as he stood in the stands behind the 17th tee with his friend Kai. “Might as well watch him finish it off.”
Paul and Lynn are from Nashport, Ohio (“Do you recall Longaberger baskets?” Paul asked) and are big golf fans. They’ve attended the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide a few times but had never been to Pebble Beach.
As they planned a trip to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary – it’s on Tuesday – they realized that Pebble Beach was the week before. So they flew in on Saturday, spent the weekend in Santa Cruz and came to the tournament on Sunday.
After making sure that parking would not be an issue on Monday, they decided to come back for the finish.
“We didn’t want to miss it because we don’t have opportunities very often,” Paul said. “Plus, we love Phil.”
Mickelson didn’t disappoint, of course, rewarding the fans with a birdie at the 18th hole.
“Very cool,” Mickelson said when asked about the big crowd that showed up Monday. “This place just means a lot to me and I’m very appreciative that I played so well here over the years.”
Even Casey was impressed by the size of the crowds. “Everybody should be applauded, especially the crowd coming out this morning,” Casey said. “I mean, this place is awesome. It’s been a treat this week.”
Had two less-notable golfers had been battling it out Monday, local resident Doug still would’ve still made it to the course for the final two holes.
“You might say it’s only two holes,” Doug said, “but it’s the two greatest holes out here. It’s well worth for me.”
