Kevin Chappell's win at the Valero Texas Open marked his first trip to the PGA TOUR winner's circle in 180 starts. From an equipment perspective, the victory happened to come when Chappell was an equipment free agent, following a four-year run with Nike Golf that came to a close at the end of 2016 when the Swoosh ceased production of clubs and golf balls.
Instead of going the Russell Henley or Patrick Rodgers route and signing a new staff deal — Henley won the Shell Houston Open last month as a Titleist staffer — Chappell opted to play without an equipment deal, which allowed him the freedom to swap out clubs at his discretion.
Despite making some changes early in the season, Chappell eventually settled into a setup at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play that included a split set of Nike Pro Combo and MMProto irons. For those unfamiliar with MMProto, it was the precursor to Nike Vapor Pro that was initially introduced on Tour at the 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.
Along with a split set of Nike irons, Chappell carried a 48-degree Nike Engage Square Sole pitching and RZN Tour Platinum golf ball. While the bag had a strong Nike presence, there were new clubs that made the cut when Chappell became a free agent.
TaylorMade, PXG and Scotty Cameron became a part of the mixed setup that helped Chappell finish T7 at the Masters, and earn his first TOUR title two weeks later at TPC San Antonio.
