2017 Barbasol Championship preview
Tee times are out for the third annual Barbasol Championship, held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National in Opelika/Auburn, Alabama. The field of 132 players will compete for the title, which includes 300 FedExCup points.
Here’s a look at the featured groups (FedExCup rankings in parentheses):
Jim Furyk (147), K.J. Choi (180), Davis Love III (211) – Perhaps they’ll trade some Presidents Cup war stories, considering they’ve combined for 16 Presidents Cup appearances as players, and were also assistant captains for their respective teams two years ago in Korea. Love’s son Dru is also in the field this week, marking the third time that father and son have played in the same event.
Tee times: Rd. 1 – 9:04 a.m. ET off 10th tee; Rd. 2 – 2:04 pm. ET off 1st tee.
Chad Campbell (64), Peter Malnati (176), Matt Every (204) – Campbell has finished T9 and T12 in his last two starts – his best back-to-back results in nine years. Malnati won the 2015 Sanderson Farms Championship and Every is a back-to-back winner of the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard.
Tee times: Rd. 1 – 9:15 a.m. ET off 10th tee; Rd. 2 – 2:15 p.m. ET off 1st tee.
Troy Merritt (143), Retief Goosen (162), Hunter Mahan (192) – Merritt, who won the 2015 Quicken Loans National, recently posted his first top 10 of the year. Goosen, one of five major winners in the field, tied for second in March at the Puerto Rico Open; it was his best result in five years. Mahan, the six-time TOUR winner, is making his second consecutive start in this event.
Tee times: Rd. 1 – 2:04 p.m. ET off 1st tee; Rd. 2 – 9:04 a.m. ET off 10th tee.
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (179), Ken Duke (197), Chesson Hadley (213) – Hadley won the LECOM Health Challenge on the Web.com Tour earlier this month. Duke’s best finish in the last four seasons was a tie for third at THE PLAYERS Championship in 2016. Fernandez-Castano will look to ride the success of recent worldwide wins by fellow Spaniards Jon Rahm and Rafa Cabrera-Bello in the last two weeks.
Tee times: Rd. 1 – 2:15 p.m. ET off 1st tee; Rd. 2 – 9:15 a.m. ET off 10th tee.
