Tiger Woods committed to THE PLAYERS Championship on Friday. It will be his first appearance at TPC Sawgrass' PLAYERS Stadium Course since his victory in 2013. He was unable to defend his title because of back surgery.
THE PLAYERS will be Woods' first start since the Masters, where he finished T17 at 5-under 283 (73-69-68-73), 13 shots behind winner Jordan Spieth. Woods was tied for fifth after 54 holes at Augusta National.
He injured his wrist on the ninth hole of the final round after striking a root while hitting a shot. Woods said after the round that "a bone kind of popped out and the joint kind of went out of place, but I put it back in." His agent, Mark Steinberg, told ESPN.com four days later that Woods' wrist was fine.
The Masters was Woods' first start since he withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open in early February.
Woods, who struggled severely with his short game in his first two starts of 2015, said afterward that he was taking time away from competition to regain his form. His short game was greatly improved at Augusta National.
Jack Nicklaus said earlier this week that Woods told him he would play the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance on June 4-7.
Woods won the 2013 PLAYERS by two shots over Kevin Streelman, David Lingmerth and Jeff Maggert. He also won in 2001, finishing one shot ahead of Vijay Singh. Woods made his famed "better than most" putt on No. 17 in the third round.
Woods also won the 1994 U.S. Amateur at TPC Sawgrass. It was the first of three consecutive victories in the U.S. Amateur.
Looking forward to going back to THE PLAYERS this year, hoping for a repeat of 2013.— Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) April 24, 2015
