Akron, OH- Carl Pettersson collected the fourth victory of his PGA TOUR career Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open and earned an invitation to the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in the process. Nine other players joined Pettersson as recent qualifiers for the event at Firestone Country Club by virtue of being inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking as of today, Monday, July 26. Players not otherwise qualified have one week remaining to either collect a victory or move inside the top 50 in the OWGR before the field is finalized Monday, Aug. 2. The 2010 Bridgestone Invitational returns to Firestone Country Club's South Course Aug. 3-9.
Despite nearly becoming the fifth player in PGA TOUR history to shoot 59 after a third round, 10-under 60, Pettersson still faced a four-stroke deficit entering Sunday's final round. On the strength of six birdies in an eight-hole stretch between No. 6 and No. 15, Pettersson posted a 3-under 67 Sunday to storm from behind and claim the one-shot victory. The 32-year-old native of Gothenburg, Sweden, claimed his first PGA TOUR title since the 2008 Wyndham Championship and will travel to Akron for his fourth-career appearance at the Bridgestone Invitational. He finished T36 last year with his best result a T27 in 2006. Pettersson will be making his first start in a World Golf Championships event since last year's Bridgestone Invitational.
Among the nine players to qualify via the OWGR is PGA TOUR rookie Rickie Fowler at No. 34, who will make the first start of his career in a World Golf Championships event. Fowler is the highest-ranked rookie in the FedExCup standings at No. 15 on the current points list and has two second-place finishes (Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Memorial Tournament) on the season. Joining Fowler on the list of qualifiers via the OWGR are Charl Schwartzel (No. 28), Nick Watney (No. 32), Francesco Molinari (No. 35), Alvaro Quiros (No. 41), Scott Verplank (No. 47), Bo Van Pelt (No. 48), Peter Hanson (No. 49) and Rhys Davies (No. 50). Molinari, Van Pelt, Hanson and Davies, like Fowler, are all qualified for the Bridgestone Invitational for the first time.
Among the notable players currently on the "bubble" just outside of the top 50 in the OWGR are Jeff Overton (No. 55), Ricky Barnes (No. 58), Brian Gay (No. 61) and Davis Love III (No. 70). All four are competing this week in the inaugural Greenbrier Classic on the PGA TOUR.
