Is there anything John Daly can't do?
The five-time PGA TOUR winner teamed with his son John to win the PNC Championship last December, and Daly continues to compete on PGA TOUR Champions despite a separated shoulder. He's set to commence the Hoag Classic on Friday at Newport Beach Country Club in Southern California.
The 55-year-old is not slowing down when it comes to music, either.
Daly's album "Whiskey and Water" will be released on Friday, including a collaboration with Hall of Fame country music artist Willie Nelson.
"We've been friends forever," said Daly of Nelson, ahead of the Hoag Classic. "I know "Whiskey and Water" is going to be played on the radio, because Willie's on it."
In the meantime, Daly maintains focus on his golf game, aiming to remain competitive in the face of physical issues, channeling the resilient spirit that has bouyed him across various personal and professional ups and downs throughout his career.
After separating his shoulder in 2007, Daly visited with Dr. James Andrews for a consultation. Andrews informed Daly that surgery would necessitate him to play with a shorter swing, which would take away the majority of his trademark power.
Daly opted against surgery, and he has played on. He has lost an estimated 30 yards of distance due to the malady, but he has maintained the essential action of his swing.
"Sometimes it will pop back into place, and I have to pop it back out," Daly said of his shoulder. "I went from a 30-yard draw flighting it 320, to a 10-yard cut flighting it about only 290, but at least Dr. Andrews said I could keep my swing.
"It's going to hurt when it gets cold, but I've had everything else, operations on both feet, the back. That's what happens when you get old."
Daly earned his first PGA TOUR Champions victory at the 2017 Insperity Invitational, and he'd love nothing more than to sing his way back into the winner's circle.
"No, no, it's separated, I just play with a separated shoulder."
