NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The only official PGA TOUR Champions event in Orange County is entering a new era as Hoag takes on title sponsorship of the 2019 tournament formerly called the Toshiba Classic. Hoag Charity Sports, a supporting organization of Hoag Hospital Foundation, announced the decision to move into a new phase of the tournament during a private reception following tournament play, setting the stage for the 24th annual event. With Hoag as title sponsor, the stage is set for the tournament to welcome three new presenting sponsors, including Konica Minolta. Hoag Charity Sports is in discussions with several potential sponsors and expects to announce sponsors in the coming weeks. As it has since 2011, proceeds from the Hoag Classic will benefit the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center and other Hoag programs, and Hoag Charity Sports will continue to produce the tournament.
The Classic brings players with more than 400 worldwide professional victories and over 50 major championships to Southern California annually. Over its history, the tournament has hosted 40 PGA TOUR Champions members in the World Golf Hall of Fame, many of whom are still actively competing. The tournament draws more than 80,000 patrons and 1,000 volunteers each year; to date, the classic has raised over $20 million for Hoag Hospital and other local charities. In addition, the tournament is a center of economic power for Orange County. An independent study by Economics Research Associates of Los Angeles determined the economic impact of the formerly named Toshiba Classic on Newport Beach and the surrounding communities of Orange County to reach $30 million.
“I want to thank Toshiba for an incredible 20-year partnership,” said Jeff Purser, who has served as the executive director of the Toshiba Classic since 1998. “Not many tournaments are lucky enough to have a title partner for two decades, and their support has allowed us to accomplish more than any other tournament in history. We are also grateful to our incoming presenting partner Konica-Minolta, and look forward to welcoming more presenting sponsors in the coming weeks as we enter a new era with Hoag as title sponsor.”
“I am honored to become only the third tournament chairman in this prestigious PGA TOUR Champions tournament’s history and look forward to leading the community development for Hoag Charity Sports as we rebrand this event in Orange County,” said Paul Folino, 2019 Hoag Classic Chairman. “I am confident that with Hoag’s name on the title, even more companies and individuals will be motivated to support Orange County’s only PGA TOUR event that benefits a world classic health care organization serving our community.”
“When Hoag opened its doors more than 65 years ago, our founders envisioned a hospital to serve those in need in Orange County,” said Robert T. Braithwaite, president and chief executive officer, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. “The Classic was designed for the very same purpose – to benefit the local community. Hoag is a proud partner and beneficiary of this incredible event.”
"Hoag Hospital has been a longtime supporter of the PGA TOUR Champions tournament in Orange County, and I'm pleased that our partnership will continue to grow as they become the new title sponsor of the Hoag Classic beginning in 2019," said PGA TOUR Champions President Greg McLaughlin. "Newport Beach Country Club has been a tremendous host for the last two decades, and with Hoag Hospital's support, we look forward to furthering this event’s charitable impact in the community."
