Q-School notebook: Notables to advance from First Stage (Sept. 20-23)

    Six sites of the First Stage of the Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament concluded Friday. Here’s a capsule look at who advanced to Second Stage and maintained their hopes of 2023 Korn Ferry Tour membership.

    Note: First Stage of Q-School will conclude next week with sites in Chardon, Ohio; Gunter, Texas; and Lincoln, Nebraska. After the conclusion of First Stage, the Second Stage will begin October 11.

    All players who advance from Second Stage to Final Stage will earn 2023 Korn Ferry Tour membership; they’ll compete for position on the Eligibility Ranking across four rounds at Final Stage, to be contested November 4-7 at The Landings Club in Savannah, Georgia.

    FORT MYERS, FLORIDA (CROWN COLONY)

    Jorge Garcia advanced victorious over the 74-man field in Fort Myers, Florida. The Venezuelan finished 23-under across four rounds with a final-round 62 consisting of seven birdies and an eagle. The Barry University alum, 26, has made 19 career starts on PGA TOUR Canada, highlighted by a T6 at the 2019 1932byBateman Open. He has also made six career starts on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, highlighted by a T21 at the 2015 Dominican Republic Open.

    Notables to advance: Runner-up Sunny Kim finished solo second at 18 under. Kim has won 85 times on the Minor League Golf Tour. He made his PGA TOUR debut at the John Deere Classic in 2010 ... Tom Lovelady finished T4 to advance. The Alabama alum is a former TOUR pro and former roommate of Justin Thomas. Lovelady finished T2 at the 2018 Barbasol Championship ... Tyler Strafaci finished T6 at 14 under. Strafaci was the 2020 U.S. Amateur Champion and played on PGA TOUR Canada in 2022. Strafaci finished No. 49 on the 2020 PGA TOUR Canada Order of Merit, including four top-20 finishes ... Sean Jacklin, son of two-time major winner Tony Jacklin, finished T6 as well. Jacklin has three top-10 finishes on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.

    Notables to miss: Former Korn Ferry Tour and PGA TOUR Canada winner Chase Wright finished one shot shy of advancing. Wright earned his first PGA TOUR card via the 2018 Korn Ferry Tour. His best finish on TOUR came at The RSM Classic in 2018 where he finished T7 ... Evan Davis finished T35 and failed to advance despite closing rounds of 66 and 69. Davis is a 2022 Belmont graduate with three amateur wins and fourteen top-10 finishes.

    CHAMPIONSGATE, FLORIDA (CHAMPIONSGATE GC)

    Joey Petronio earned medalist honors and advanced to Second Stage of Q-School at 14-under total. A pair of 66s in the final two rounds helped separate him from the rest of the field. The University of North Florida graduate, 29, has made 11 career starts on PGA TOUR Canada. He recorded his first collegiate hole-in-one in 2014 at Lake Nona.

    Notables to advance: Mickey DeMorat of Merritt Island, Florida, finished T2 at 13 under. The Liberty alum, nephew of acclaimed comedian Daniel Tosh, has made 43 career Korn Ferry Tour starts, highlighted by a T7 at the 2019 Panama Championship … John Pak of Coral Gables, Florida, finished T5 at 11 under. The Florida State alum finished No. 1 on the inaugural PGA TOUR University Velocity Global Ranking in 2021, and he made 16 Korn Ferry Tour starts this past season, with a best finish of T17 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic … Willie Mack III finished T13 at 7 under. Mack, 34, was the 2021 APGA Player of the Year … Braden Thornberry finished T13 at 7 under. The Ole Miss alum, 25, was the 2017 NCAA Division I individual champion and won that year’s Haskins Award as top player in men’s collegiate golf.

    Notables to miss: Olin Browne, Jr. finished T38 at even par. The Pepperdine alum, 34, is the son of longtime TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions pro Olin Browne … Anthony Brodeur finished 71st at 15 over. His dad Martin is a longtime NHL goalie and three-time Stanley Cup champion with the New Jersey Devils.

    MARICOPA, ARIZONA (AK- CHIN SOUTHERN DUNES GOLF CLUB)

    Alistar Docherty had a final-round 65 to lead him to victory at 26-under. Docherty had 26 birdies across four rounds, the second most of the field. In 2022, Docherty had two Korn Ferry Tour starts and finished T23 at the Wichita Open Benefitting KU Wichita Pediatrics. The Chico State alum has also appeared on PGA TOUR Canada and PGA TOUR Latinoamerica, and he made the cut at the TOUR’s 2019 Barracuda Championship.

    Notables to advance: Joseph Winslow of Overland Park, Kansas, finished solo third at 24 under. The University of South Florida alum, 29, finished No. 27 on the 2021-22 PGA TOUR Latinoamerica Order of Merit. He has made 27 career Korn Ferry Tour starts, highlighted by a T10 at The Ascendant presented by Blue in 2019 … Gunner Wiebe of Phoenix, Arizona finished T19 at 11 under. Wiebe’s dad Mark is a longtime TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions pro … KK Limbhasut of Phoenix, Arizona, finished T19 at 11 under. The Cal-Berkeley alum is a former teammate and business school classmate of Collin Morikawa.

    Notables to miss: Anthony Paolucci of Rancho Santa Fe, California, finished T27 at 9 under, just one off the number to advance. The University of Southern California alum, 29, is a former No. 1 junior golfer in the U.S. … Sam Triplett of Paradise Valley, Arizona, finished T37 at 7 under. His dad Kirk is a longtime TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions pro.

    MOBILE, ALABAMA (MAGNOLIA GROVE-CROSSING)

    Blain Turner punched his ticket to Second Stage of Q-School after finishing 22 under. In a tight race for the top spot, Turner rallied from behind and made eight birdies for a final-round 64, the lowest score of any player in the field. At Trevecca Nazarene University, Turner set an abundance of school records including most wins and most birdies in a season. He never played golf before his freshman year of high school, but he won his district championship as a sophomore at Wilson Central HS in Tennessee.

    Notables to advance: Jack Maguire of St. Petersburg, Florida, finished solo second at 21 under, one shot off the medalist pace. On the Korn Ferry Tour, Maguire has nine total top-10 finishes spanning from 2016-2021. The Florida State alum played 40 Korn Ferry Tour events in the 2020-21 season, highlighted by a pair of T7s during the pandemic hiatus … Wilson Furr of Birmingham, Alabama, finished T4 at 19 under. The University of Alabama alum competed on PGA TOUR Canada this past season; his brother Prentiss is a highly acclaimed musical artist … James Nicholas of New York City finished T16 at 16 under. The former Ivy League Player of the Year started his collegiate career as a two-sport athlete for the Yale Bulldogs, playing golf and football in his freshman year. He is longtime friends with Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who has previously caddied for Nicholas on the Korn Ferry Tour …

    Notables to miss: Jonathan Hodge of Jefferson City, Tennessee, finished T27 at 14 under. The longtime pro fell one shot off the cut line despite making just one bogey in 72 holes … Jonathan Brightwell of Edmond, Oklahoma, finished T45 at 10 under. The 2021 University of Oklahoma alum competed on the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour, making 22 starts and finishing No. 165 on the Points List.

    MONTGOMERY, TEXAS (WALDEN ON LAKE CONROE)

    Will Holcomb V of Huntsville, Texas, earned medalist honors at 18 under, opening the week with a 10-under 62 and never looking back. The 2021 Sam Houston State alum advanced to the semifinals of the 2019 U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst, and he won the 2016 Texas State High School 3A Championship. He has yet to make a Korn Ferry Tour start.

    Notables to advance: Greg Yates of Mansfield, Texas, finished solo seventh at 11 under. The Texas A&M alum, 31, has made 94 career Korn Ferry Tour starts, highlighted by a T2 at the 2015 Greater Dallas Open … Josh McCarthy of Danville, California, finished T8 at 10 under. McCarthy played collegiately at Pepperdine alongside rising TOUR star Sahith Theegala, and he has made four Korn Ferry Tour starts since turning pro in summer 2021 … Brett White of Houston, Texas, finished T14 at 7 under. The 2016 Eastern Michigan alum took a year hiatus from the game early in his pro career as he recovered from viral encephalitis; he underwent 10 weeks of physical therapy to learn to walk again.

    Notables to miss: Garett Reband of York, South Carolina, finished T30 at 3 under. The University of Oklahoma alum finished No. 5 on the inaugural PGA TOUR University Velocity Global Ranking in 2021 … Preston Stanley of Katy, Texas, finished T30 at 3 under. The 2015 Houston Baptist alum gained notoriety this past summer on the TOUR Monday qualifier circuit; he made the cut in each of the John Deere Classic and Barracuda Championship.

    NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS (WHITE EAGLE GOLF CLUB-RED/WHITE)

    A pair of pros, Matt Organisak and Chris Crisologo, shared medalist honors at 11 under to advance to Second Stage. Crisologo, 26, competed on PGA TOUR Canada in 2022 with two top-10 finishes and a No. 46 finish on the Order of Merit. The Canadian graduated from Simon Fraser University in 2019. Organisak, 24, hails from Newton, Massachusetts, and graduated from Emory University in 2020. He played competitive tennis until he was 14, and he picked and packed hot pepper seeds for work as a high schooler.

    Notables to advance: Justin Hueber of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, finished T9 at 7 under. The University of Indianapolis alum, 35, has made 87 career Korn Ferry Tour starts and is a fishing enthusiast … Tripp Kinney of Des Moines, Iowa, finished T15 at 5 under. The Iowa State alum competed as a Korn Ferry Tour rookie in 2022 … Charlie Saxon of Dallas, Texas, finished T22 at 3 under. The University of Oklahoma alum has made 103 career Korn Ferry Tour starts and is a former roommate of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

    Notables to miss: Tee-K Kelly of Wheaton, Illinois, finished T27 at 1 under. The Ohio State alum, 28, made 20 Korn Ferry Tour starts in 2022, highlighted by a T9 at the Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard in Bogota … Theo Humphrey of Dallas, Texas, finished T27 at 1 under. The Vanderbilt alum, 26, has made 64 career Korn Ferry Tour starts including a pair of runner-up finishes.
