SAVANNAH, Georgia – Timothy Madigan, Scottie Scheffler and Dan McCarthy sit tied atop the leaderboard after the third round of the Savannah Golf Championship. Scheffler and Madigan each fired a 5-under 67 to climb the leaderboard, while McCarthy, who began the day with the solo-lead, battled to post a 1-under 71. All three players sit one stroke ahead of Brett Coletta, who is solo-fourth after a third-round 68.

McCarthy began the third round with a one-stroke lead but struggled with bogeys on Nos. 4, 8 and 9 to make the turn at 1-over. He fought back with birdies on Nos. 11, 15 and 17 to finish his round under par and in a tie for the lead. McCarthy, who currently sits 119th in The 25 standings, is looking for his first Web.com Tour title and noted the pressure that comes along with winning.

“I get nervous, I’m aware of the situation and what’s going on and that’s all part of the process of trying to get comfortable and hitting good shots even when you’re nervous,” McCarthy said. “I just tried to tell myself all day that I’ve hit good shots under pressure before and when I’ve been nervous, so I just tried to do the same today.”

The former Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada Order of Merit winner has plenty of success to draw back on including his four victories in Canada during the 2016 season which earned him Player of the Year honors.

“I got in this position a lot a couple of years ago in Canada and I got hurt the following year,” McCarthy said. “It’s taken me a long time to battle back and I’m going to draw on those experiences from a couple of years ago and try to control myself and what I do.”

Joining McCarthy atop the leaderboard is Web.com Tour rookie Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler was 1-over through four holes but rebounded with a pair of three-birdie streaks, first on Nos. 5-7 and then on Nos. 15-17. He leads the field in putting (1.513 per GIR) and he tops the field with 22 birdies through 54 holes.

“I got a few putts to go in and got some decent momentum going,” Scheffler said. “I got a few bad breaks early in the round, it wasn’t because I was playing super bad I just got some breaks that didn’t go my way. I was able to make a few putts coming in and I made nice birdies on 16 and 17 to close out the round.”

His 5-under 67 is his best third-round score of the season and it positioned him atop the leaderboard for the first time on the Web.com Tour. It reversed a trend from his two top-10s this season, as he shot 75 on Saturday at The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at The Abaco Club before finishing seventh, and he shot a third-round 73 at the Country Club de Bogota Championship before finishing fifth.

Madigan, the third co-leader, fired a third-round 67 to earn to share of the lead heading into Sunday. Madigan played 45 consecutive holes bogey free, a streak that began Thursday and ended with just his third bogey of the week on No. 16 Saturday. He recovered with a birdie on the 18th hole to post a 5-under 67 and create a three-way tie atop the leaderboard.

“It’s pretty bunched right now,” Madigan said. “You knew someone would get off to a pretty good start here but it would mellow out for rounds three and four. My main goal for today was close the gap on the leaders, which I think I’ve done.”

Madigan posted rounds of 67-67-69-67 and finished T13 at last week’s Chitimacha Louisiana Open presented by MISTRAS, and he has now recorded seven straight rounds in the 60s. He has kept this streak alive with his short game, as he ranks last in the field in greens in regulation (32 of 54) but second in scrambling (19 of 22).

Wade Binfield and Brian Campbell sit one stroke behind Coletta at 11-under, two strokes off the lead.
