GARLAND, Texas – Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current NFL on CBS analyst Tony Romo carded a final-round 1-over 72 during an overcast final round at Firewheel at Garland Bridges to finish at 13-over 297. With a T72 finish, Romo’s run in the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament ends after the First Stage. The top 22 and ties advanced to the Second Stage, which will be hosted at five sites in early November.

“Each day I got better and my swing got tighter,” said Romo. “It’s a tight golf course and if you miss a couple spots here and there you can put up a big number. I think three holes were our whole week in a nutshell. But a 72 today, getting closer.”

Starting the day off the 10th tee, Romo earned an early birdie at No. 12 to get into red numbers. The 38-year-old followed that up with bogeys on Nos. 13, 14 and 16 to make the turn at 2-over 37. Romo rebounded on the front nine with birdies at the third and eighth, along with a bogey at the fourth, to shoot a 1-under 35. The 1-over 72 total was his best round of the tournament, topping consecutive 2-over 73s in the second and third rounds.

“I just think the direction I'm going, its positive,” said Romo. “You know I'm excited about the improvement that's taking place over the last four or five months. It’s safe to say that you’ll see me again (out here).”

Franklin Corpening of Aledo, Texas, earned the one-stroke victory with a closing birdie at the last, capping a back-nine 4-under 31. Corpening carded five birdies and an eagle at the 10th during the final round.

“I played the Mackenzie Tour (this year) and really didn't play that well,” said Corpening. “To know that I had to play good to make it and do what I need to do, it gives me a lot of confidence moving forward to Second Stage … I putted very well all week. My only other professional win was on the Adams Tour in 2015, also at Firewheel.”

With a birdie at the last, Nick Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma, finished at 11-under 273 and T21, enough to advance Second Stage. He joined amateur Min Woo Lee and locals Cory Churchman and Drew Evans in making the cut on the number.
