SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Gibby Gilbert and J.C. Snead shot a 10-under 62 at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa to take a one-stroke lead after Monday's first round of the Demaret Division competition at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.

The team of Jim Albus and Jim Dent posted a 63 and are the closest pursuers to Gilbert and Snead. Two-time defending champions Gary Player and Bob Charles shot 67 and are tied for sixth, five shots back entering Tuesday's final round.

The 36-hole, team-best ball Demaret Division features 21 teams, including some of golf's greatest champions age 70 and older. Six members of the World Golf Hall of Fame are competing -- Charles, Player, Billy Casper, Doug Ford (who will be inducted next month), Gene Littler and Lee Trevino.

Competing in the Demaret Division for the first time, Gilbert and Snead combined for nine birdies and an eagle, offset by just a single bogey on No. 18.

"We played well today, J.C. really played well today, and the result was a lot better than we expected today," Gilbert said. "Neither one of us has been playing a whole lot of golf, so we survived ourselves a little bit out there. We just need to try and play well again tomorrow."

Snead got the team off to a fast start with four consecutive birdies on Nos. 2-5, then added a fifth birdie at the ninth hole to make the turn in 5-under 31. Snead credited a hot putter for his good play to start the round.

"I haven't had a putting round like that in probably 20 years," Snead said.

Gilbert continued the team's momentum with an 8-foot eagle putt on the par-5 11th, then followed with a birdie on No. 12 before Snead converted birdie putts on Nos. 12 and 14. Gilbert made the team's final birdie on the par-3 15th. Despite the good play, both players were disappointed to finish with a bogey on the closing hole.

"I hate finishing with that bogey on the last; it just leaves a sour taste in your mouth," Gilbert said. "At least we're still in the hunt, we're right there, just need to try and play well tomorrow."
