Team Love set scoring records to win PNC Father-Son Challenge

    ORLANDO, Fla. -- Davis Love III and Dru Love closed with a 16-under 56 in a scramble format to set two tournament records and win the PNC Father-Son Challenge by three shots Sunday.

    Team Love shot 27 on the front nine at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, took the lead with a birdie at No. 11 and finished off the record round with four more birdies and an eagle. The 56 beat by one the record previously held by Raymond Floyd and his son in 1995, and by Bob Charles and his son in 1998.

    John and Little John Daly shot 62 and tied for second with Retief and Leo Goosen and Stewart and Connor Cink.

    Team Love finished at 26-under 118, breaking by one shot the record in the scramble format.

    • Retief, who turns 50 on February 3, plans to make PGA TOUR Champions debut at 2019 Oasis Championship in Boca Raton, Florida
    • South African native/Orlando, Florida resident, who counts a pair of U.S. Open Championships (2001, 2004) among his seven PGA TOUR titles, will be inducted into World Golf Hall of Fame with Class of 2019

    Stewart/Connor Cink (T2/-23)

    • Birdies six of the first seven holes and five of the last six to finish T2
    • 121 (-23) total is best in six appearances for Team Cink
    • Seeking to win the PNC Father Son for a second time after claiming the 2013 title by three strokes (61-61—122)
    • Partnered son Reagan in 2015 and 2017 and has never finished out of the top-10 in five previous starts (Won/2013, T8/2014, T9/2015, T2/2016, T6/2017)
    • Stewart has wife, Lisa as his caddie this week while Connor has brother, Reagan carrying his bag
    • Highlight last season was T2 at Travelers Championship, his best result on TOUR since victory at 2009 The Open Championship, one of six career PGA TOUR titles
    • Qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs for the 10th time and finished the season No. 73 in the standings

    John/Little John Daly (T2/-23)

    • Despite starting second round with six birdies in the first seven holes, became fourth team in tournament history to lead with a sub-60 round and fail to win (2018/Team Daly/59/T2, 2015/Team Singh/59/T5, 2001/Team Irwin/59/2nd, 1999/Team Irwin/59/T6). Note: Team Irwin finished 3rd in 1998 after a first-round 59, which was two back of Team Charles/57.
    • Making third appearance at PNC Father Son Challenge after T9 finishes in 2016 and 2017
    • Owns five PGA TOUR wins, including 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 The Open, plus one PGA TOUR Champions victory (2017 Insperity Invitational)
    • Highlight on PGA TOUR Champions this year was also in a team event – T5 at Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf
    • Following opening 59, marked the fifth time in tournament history a team held the first-round lead with a sub-60 score. All but Team Daly went on to win (2017/Team Cabrera/59, 2006/Team Langer/59, 2005/Team Langer/59, 1998/Team Charles/57)

    Miscellaneous

    • David/Carter Toms finished solo-fifth at 21-under in their tournament debut. They were the best of four teams making their tournament debut (Jim/Mike Furyk/T9, Matt/Peter Kuchar/T9, Darren/Tyrone Clarke/15th)
    • Jack/GT Nicklaus finished alone in sixth, improving on the duo’s 15th last year. This year’s event marked Jack’s 17th appearance at the PNC Father Son Challenge, but second with grandson, GT
    • Bernhard Langer, partnering daughter Jackie Langer John, finished 16th while attempting to become the first to win with a record third different child
    • After just two eagles in the opening round (Team Nicklaus/No. 3, Team Cink/No. 18), seven were scored in the second round, including two by the winning team; (No.3 – Team Kite, Team Goosen, Team Love, Team Nicklaus; No. 5 – Team Kuchar, Team Furyk; No. 14 – Team Love)
