Corey Pereira (Sacramento, California) and Riley Lewis (Prescott, Arizona) share the 36-hole lead at the Mexico Championship presented by Scotia Wealth Management. Suspended due to lightning late on Friday, the second round resumed at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, with Pereira bogeying the last to card a 3-under 68 and Lewis birdieing his last two holes to post a 4-under 67. The co-leaders sit at 11-under 131, two shots clear of PGA TOUR Americas points list No. 1 Patrick Flavin (Highwood, Illinois) and Mason Williams (Bridgeport, West Virginia). Flavin fired an 8-under 63 on Friday, while Williams posted a 64 on Saturday.
Pereira, a 31-year-old University of Washington alum, ranks 20th on the PGA TOUR Americas points list, with three top-25 finishes in four starts, including a season-best T10 at the 94 Abierto del Centro Zurich presentado por Personal in Córdoba, Argentina. Lewis, a 24-year-old Loyola Marymount University alum, is 15th on the points list, highlighted by four top-27 finishes that include a T8 at the season-opening ECP Brazil Open in Rio de Janeiro.
Bogey-free through 36 holes, Omar Morales (Puebla, Mexico) joins Brantley Scott (Dothan, Alabama) in a tie for fifth at 8-under 134. The former UCLA Bruin, No. 9 in last year’s PGA TOUR University ranking, followed an opening-round 68 with a 66 on Friday afternoon. Scott, the opening round co-leader along with Pereira, finished bogey-bogey to post an even-par 71 on Saturday.
José de Jesús Rodríguez (Irapuato, Mexico) closed with a birdie at the par-3 ninth on Saturday to fire a course-record-tying 62. The 45-year-old veteran, better known as “El Camarón” (Shrimp), was 8 under through 16 holes Friday, including a 7-under 29 on the back nine. At 6-under 136, he will enter the final 36 holes in a tie for eighth.
The second round was completed at 9:26 a.m. Saturday, with the cut set at 1 under and 73 players advancing to the weekend.
The third round will begin at 10 a.m. local time, with players starting on Nos. 1 and 10 tees in threesomes. The final group will tee off at 12:12 p.m.
