FedExCup updates: Michael Brennan vaults into FedExCup Playoffs with Wyndham Championship win; Jackson Koivun matches a Tiger Woods record

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Michael Brennan took care of business at the Wyndham Championship, winning by three shots to claim his second TOUR title and punch his ticket to the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time.

Brennan was the lone player to vault into the FedExCup top 70 with his victory, but because he was playing in the final group, the outcome kept the bubble in suspense until the final putt dropped. Steven Fisk was the unfortunate player bumped out of the Playoffs, while Jackson Koivun held onto the No. 70 spot to become the lucky “bubble boy” and extend his season.

Here’s a closer look at who’s in, who’s out and how the final pieces of the FedExCup Playoffs field came together at the Wyndham.

Michael Brennan (FedExCup No. 105, projected No. 47): Brennan knew he needed a top-two finish at Wyndham to extend his season. He did one better.

The 24-year-old Wake Forest product closed Sunday with a 64 that featured five consecutive birdies on Nos. 4-8 to win by three shots over Beau Hossler to claim his second TOUR title. The victory not only secured Brennan’s first FedExCup Playoffs appearance but vaulted him from No. 105 in the FedExCup into the top 50.

Brennan entered the week knowing exactly what was at stake. He needed a three-way tie for second or better to qualify for the Playoffs, but he wasn’t interested in simply backing into the postseason.

“I knew it from the start of the week, that was my goal going into the week,” he said. “I mean, the goal is just to play good golf, you never know where that's going to leave you. … Definitely the goal was to try to go win the golf tournament, but that's kind of my goal most other weeks. But I knew I was coming in this week in good form, I was playing good golf. Just trying to do what I did the last few weeks this week.”

He certainly did. After a 63 on Saturday that included five birdies on his back nine, Brennan came out Sunday and quickly got momentum rolling, making five straight birdies from Nos. 4-8. His 22-under total was enough to hold off Hossler, who needed a victory to advance to the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

“It's everything. I don't want to be done playing golf,” Brennan told CBS after his round. “I feel like I've played the best golf I have all year the last couple weeks. Unfortunately, a couple tough Sundays. But outside of that, I've been playing really, really solid. I mean, this is my sixth week in a row, so seven's a lot, but I think I'm going to be perfectly happy running on fumes next week.”

Brennan knows what an unexpected breakthrough feels like. He won the Bank of Utah Championship last October in his first start as a professional, capturing his first TOUR title before he had even established himself on TOUR. That quick success, however, made the challenges that followed a little harder to process.

“I got off to such a good quick and hot start that I thought it would be easier,” he admitted. “I was like, ‘Oh, I've already won one, like this is going to be a piece of cake.’ That's probably why I felt like I struggled a little bit. I felt like I battled pretty well, made some cuts. It was nice to play in all four majors, that was really special. But I didn't feel like I started playing golf like I was playing last year until the last month or so. I'm glad it's better late than never.”

The timing of his resurgence could hardly have been better. Brennan had been in contention after 54 holes in each of his previous two starts, at the 3M Open and Rocket Classic, but couldn't close either one out. The near-misses, though, helped build momentum heading into Greensboro.

“Yeah, I am glad to keep playing because I feel like I'm playing good golf right now. I've been playing good for a couple weeks. It's just great to get another opportunity playing against some of the best players in the world. I didn't want to go home and sit on my couch when I'm playing good golf.”

Steven Fisk (FedExCup No. 69, projected No. 71): Fisk entered the Wyndham in position to make the Playoffs at No. 69, but after missing the cut Friday, his postseason hopes came down to what happened around him. In the end, Fisk was the only player to fall out of the top 70, finishing No. 71 in the FedExCup and narrowly missing the postseason.

The 29-year-old had already secured his second TOUR title earlier this season at the ISCO Championship, but his victory was followed by a difficult stretch. Fisk missed the cut in each of his final three starts at the 3M Open, Rocket Classic and Wyndham, ending his season in Greensboro.

On the bubble

Jackson Koivun (FedExCup No. 70, projected No. 70): Koivun arrived at the Wyndham sitting on the FedExCup bubble at No. 70. He left Greensboro in the same spot – happily – earning a place in the Playoffs after a remarkable run that has seen him earn his spot in the postseason in just five starts in 2026.

Koivun, who turned professional after finishing T23 as an amateur at the U.S. Open, made the cut at Sedgefield with two shots to spare and then delivered a 66 on Saturday to move into the top 15. That put him in position to control his own destiny heading into Sunday, but with the FedExCup standings shifting around him, he knew his Playoffs fate might not be settled until the final putt dropped.

“I'm the type of player who likes to know where I stand and I was definitely looking,” said the 21-year-old Auburn product, who finished with a 1-over 71 Sunday. “There's a leaderboard on 15, 16, 17, 18 so I kind of saw what I needed to do.”

Koivun’s rapid ascent has been remarkable. He won the 3M Open in just his third start as a professional, and now, he's matched a record held by Tiger Woods for the fewest starts (five) needed to qualify for the postseason.

“It's pretty cool,” he admitted. “Obviously whenever you're in the record books with Tiger it's a good name to get acquainted with. Not quite there yet, so just got to wait it out.”

At the time, Koivun knew he had put himself in a good position but still had to wait for the rest of the Wyndham field to determine his fate.

“I mean, obviously I wanted to make the Playoffs, and I knew that was a farfetched goal,” he said. “If I told myself back in June that I would be sitting at 70 and waiting it out in Greensboro, I think I'd be pretty happy.”

Once the dust settled, Koivun indeed remained at No. 70, becoming the "bubble boy" and extending a season that began only after the TOUR’s regular season was already well underway.

"At the end of the day it's kind of the season-long goal, to make the Playoffs," he noted. "Obviously starting a little late is definitely a hiccup in the road, but to be able to be in this position's really cool. ...

“Just have to go into Memphis, hopefully get there with a carefree attitude, get some good prep work in and try to keep climbing.”
