CHANDLER, Ariz. – Lee McCoy used two drivers throughout the week at Final Stage of the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament.
Yes, two drivers.
The University of Georgia alum spent some time last month experimenting with drivers on a golf simulator in his house, and he had a thought that maybe his game could benefit from different options on the course. He could use a 10.5-degree model when the hole demanded precision, and an 8.5-degree model when distance was at more of a premium.
This week at the Whirlwind Golf Club, with several open fairways at the club’s Cattail and Devil’s Claw layouts, it seemed like a good time to test the theory.
McCoy’s strategy paid off in a big way at Final Stage, as the 23-year-old Florida native earned medalist honors with a four-day total of 28 under, securing fully exempt status for the 2018 Web.com Tour Regular Season.
“One is going to come pretty much straight down and almost plug in soft fairways, and one comes out low with no spin,” McCoy said of the difference between his two Callaway Great Big Bertha Epic drivers.
“I hit the short one more … depending on if I’m not hitting it well, I’ll use the short one, make sure I get it in play … but it really has kind of changed my game, putting that longer driver in, especially out here on these 590-, 600-yard par 5s where I can actually get there in two. That’s been a part of my game that has been missing for a long time, and fortunately I was able to get longer without actually changing my golf swing, which is huge because by the time you get to this stage, making big changes to try to gain distance doesn’t ever work.
“You see guys try it all the time, and end up really frustrated and try to go back to what they were doing before. It was a big improvement in my game.”
McCoy's play this week certainly backed up the sentiment.I hit the short one more … depending on if I’m not hitting it well, I’ll use the short one, make sure I get it in play … but it really has kind of changed my game, putting that longer driver in, especially out here on these 590-, 600-yard par 5s where I can actually get there in two.
