PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Shell Oil Company, the PGA TOUR and the Houston Golf Association (HGA) announced today a five year extension of the Shell title sponsorship for the Shell Houston Open through the 2017 tournament.
"I am pleased and proud that Shell will continue to be the title sponsor of the Houston Open," said Marvin Odum, President, Shell Oil Company. "To me, this is much more than just a golf tournament. It is an opportunity for us to give back to the city and citizens of Houston through charitable contributions."
Since Shell became the tournament sponsor, the HGA has contributed more than $50 million to regional charities. Last year, the Shell Houston Open, along with other golf-related fundraising activities by the HGA, generated $2,145,000 for charity.
"We are thrilled that Shell will continue its longstanding support of the Shell Houston Open," said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. "Shell has been a terrific partner of the PGA TOUR and Houston Golf Association and has contributed significantly to the tournament's growth and charitable and economic impact in the Houston area."
The Shell Houston Open is the 10th oldest tournament on the PGA TOUR and Shell has been the title sponsor since 1992, the third-longest running tournament sponsor on TOUR.
"Shell Oil Company has given our event great stability and its support has enabled our organization to continue to positively impact the lives of young people every year," said Steve Timms, president and CEO of the Houston Golf Association.
The Shell Houston Open dates back to 1946, when legendary Texans Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan battled for the title, with Nelson winning by two strokes at River Oaks Country Club. The tournament has been held at Redstone Golf Club since 2003. Anthony Kim is the defending champion.
Synonymous with professional golf since its landmark television series Shell's Wonderful World of Golf first aired from 1962-1970 and from 1994-2003, Shell has remained steadfast in its involvement with the sport. It is the sole Founding Partner of the World Golf Foundation, which oversees the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Fla., and is also the founding corporate partner for The First Tee, a WGF outreach program that has brought the game of golf and its values to millions of children worldwide.
