Defending champion Bart Bryant is the only two-time winner of this week’s DICK’S Sporting Goods Open.
Bryant made a 40-foot birdie putt on the 54th hole last year at En-Joie Golf Club for a 1-stroke victory over Michael Bradley. Bryant, who also won the tournament in 2013, shot 16-under-par 200 with a closing 65. Tom Gillis and Marco Dawson shared third with 203 totals, followed by Paul Goydos, Kenny Perry and Mark Calcavecchia at 204.
Bryant rallied from a 2-shot deficit after 36 holes. His birdie at the 11th hole gave him the lead for the first time in the final round. He locked up the victory with the long birdie putt at the 18th. Bryant was bogey-free over the last 29 holes, with only 1 bogey for the tournament.
“To make a putt like that to win a tournament, there's a little bit of luck involved and it was just kind of my day,” Bryant said. “I didn’t have to hit it real hard. I felt like I had good speed all day. Luckily, it just got on the right track and just stayed there.
“I played awfully well, I didn't hit a bad shot. I played conservatively, a little bit conservative coming in, but smart. You know, it got the job done. Very pleased with the way everything went.”
Bryant’s first PGA TOUR Champions victory came in his rookie season in Endicott, N.Y.
“I don't know what it is about New York,” he said. “I've had a lot of other opportunities, I just haven't got it done, but for some reason I got it done here twice.”
