Editor's note: In deciding upon the 10 best rounds on PGA TOUR Champions this season, we had only a couple of criteria. First and foremost, the round had to be the lowest score that day. Yes, a 64 probably is a very good round. But if someone else shot a 62 that day, it’s hard to argue it deserves a spot in our countdown.
The other criterium was this, and it was pretty loose: The round had to mean something. It didn’t necessarily have to lead directly to a victory (though it did in several instances), but it had to make an impact on that player’s tournament finish and/or Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs standing.
Player: Bernhard Langer
Tournament: The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex
Relation to par: 2 under
Key to round: Of the 141 players in the field, Langer was one of only two to birdie both par 3s on the front nine. Fifteen players carded 2s on No. 5; only 10 recorded birdies on No. 8.
What it meant: Langer continued his assault on the PGA TOUR Champions’ majors by seizing the lead in windy, rainy conditions at Royal Porthcawl. Considering how he had stomped the field when the rota was at the same site in 2014 – a 13-shot victory – it let everyone know this would be Langer’s tournament to win. He led the field by only one shot, but the conditions were brutal and he had taken ill after arriving in Wales. "I'm pretty pleased that I'm on top of the leaderboard at the moment," Langer said. "Conditions were extremely tough, and I’m not feeling very good physically. So, just glad that I made it through the day and I'm in contention.” The German would go on to claim his third major of 2017.
No. 10: Mike Goodes, Round 3, Shaw Charity Classic
