Started skating when he was 2 and initially wanted to play professional hockey. Is the all-time leading goal scorer in Ohio high school hockey. Sports Illustrated featured him for his achievements.

His parents both attended college at the United States Military Academy in New York. Dad played lacrosse for the Army team.

Didn't start playing golf competitively until his senior year in high school.
