Generations of mothers came out to TPC Sawgrass Sunday to celebrate Mother's Day in what has become one of the great traditions at THE PLAYERS Championship.
Along with the green on the Stadium Course, pink was the dominant color Sunday as "Pink Out Day" was once again proclaimed at THE PLAYERS in observance of Mother's Day and for the awareness of breast cancer -- THE PLAYERS "charity of the day."
Players, sponsors, volunteers and fans came strong, donning everything imaginable from head to toe in pink.
Fans with their pink "5k with Donna T-shirts gained access to the “5K with Donna Courtyard.”
The Sawgrass Splash, THE PLAYERS signature cocktail, was pink on Sunday.
Also, golf balls used at the PwC’s First Tee Challenge in the Stadium Village were pink.
There were additional pink floral displays around TPC Sawgrass, most notably on Tree Island (in the lake at No. 17). Normally dressed with white begonias, yellow marigolds and blue delphinium, crews with the TPC Sawgrass Agronomy team worked into the evening Saturday and planted 3,500 pink vincas and 200 Hawaiian Tis.
Moms in attendance Sunday also received a commemorative Mother’s Day pin.
One of the more popular activities on Mother’s Day was a photo booth inside Stadium Village allowing moms and their families to take a photo with the trophy and share on their Facebook pages.
Among the families taking advantage of the special day were "The Harkeys" of Ponte Vedra Beach, made possible by Geoff Ogilvy and his wife Juli. Despite her husband missing the cut, Juli Ogilvy, whose mom and dad were also in attendance earlier in the week to spend time with the couple and their three children, made sure their friends had tickets on Mother's Day. The Ogilvys then boarded a flight to Bulgaria.
"I think it's so nice and very appreciated what THE PLAYERS does on Mother's Day," said Ann Harkey, mother of three and grandmother of five. "It's wonderful."
Daughter-in-law Penny Harkey, also a mom with a 2-year-old, agreed. "To have that recognition by THE PLAYERS is great," Penny said. "It is beautiful out here."
