CHARLES SCHWAB CUP CHAMPIONSHIP CHIPS IN SUPPORT FOR V FOUNDATION WINE
CELEBRATION
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The Champions Tour's Charles Schwab Cup
Championship is lending its support to the Sixth Annual V Foundation Wine
Celebration to be held Aug. 6-7 in Napa, Calif.
The Charles Schwab Cup Championship returns for the second straight year to
the Sonoma Golf Club on Oct. 19-24. As part of its contribution to the
V Foundation Wine Celebration, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship will donate a
number of auction items, including a pro-am spot in the 2004 Championship. Additional items up for bid include an Honorary
Observer position at the event, a golf bag autographed by Champions Tour players and wedges from Dave Pelz.
"Giving back to the communities in which the tournaments are hosted has been
a part of the fabric of the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour since their
inception. We are proud to support the V Foundation Wine Celebration and
its commitment to research and finding a cure for cancer," said Donna Orender,
Senior Vice President of Strategic Development at the PGA TOUR. The V
Foundation Wine Celebration has been named as a beneficiary of the Charles
Schwab Cup Championship.
"We are proud of the fact that in 2003 we were able to donate nearly $300,000
to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma County, The V Foundation Wine Celebration, The First Tee and other local charities
as a result of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship and the Champions Dinner," said Chad Chatlos, Executive
Director, Charles Schwab Cup Championship. We look forward to increasing this number over the coming years and continuing
to help build our communities."
The Charles Schwab Cup Championship is the season-ending event on the Champions Tour's 30-event schedule. Only the top-30
money winners of 2004 through the preceding week's tournament qualify. Competition is fierce throughout the year to secure
one of the coveted playing spots, particularly in September and October as the Championship approaches. A top-30 position
will
ensure fully exempt status for the 2005 Champions Tour season.
"The PGA TOUR and Champions Tour continue to astound us with their generous support," said Wine Celebration co-founder
Julie Constantin. "Their continued commitment to the V Foundation for Cancer Research fortifies our battle to win the war
against cancer."
The V Foundation Wine Celebration, sponsored by ESPN and GlaxoSmithKline, is a weekend-long event held in Napa. It includes
a Friday evening champagne reception at the Villagio Inn and Spa followed by private vintner dinners and wine pairings at
Clos Pegase, Far Niente, Quintessa and Trefethen Vineyards.
Saturday's activities include a golf clinic and golf tournament at the Eagle Vines Golf Club in Napa, private estate tours
and tasting at Darioush, Villa Amorosa, Kuleto Estate and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and a cancer public forum by the V Foundation
Scientific Review Committee doctors to discuss the latest
findings in cancer research. An auction preview luncheon at Rudd Winery and Vineyards is also offered. The weekend culminates
Saturday evening with dinner, entertainment and a silent and live auction at the Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery. Duke University
Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his wife, Mickie, will host the Wine Celebration for their fourth year in a row.
Proceeds from the weekend event go to the latest, most promising cancer research throughout the nation, as well as locally
at Queen of the Valley in Napa, UCSF and Stanford hospitals. The V Foundation Wine Celebration is
proud to announce that this year's Fund-A-Need will benefit the V Foundation Gil Nickel Fund, in honor of Far Niente founder,
Gil Nickel. This fund has been established to support cancer research in the area of malignant melanoma.
About The V Foundation and the Wine Celebration: In 1993, just seven weeks
before his death from cancer, basketball coach and sportscaster Jim Valvano was presented with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage
at ESPN's First American Sports Awards (ESPYs). In his acceptance speech he announced the formation of The V Foundation for
Cancer Research. Since its inception, The V Foundation has raised more than $30 million for cancer research and awareness
programs.
The V Foundation Wine Celebration is a weekend fundraising event, held annually in the Napa Valley. Each year guests enjoy
gourmet winemaker dinners, a golf tournament and silent and live auctions. Proceeds from the event fund
local and national cancer research. Cash donations made in honor of a loved one
can be made at any time during the year and are 100% tax deductible.
