Delaware Club Professional Who Stunned the Golf World with His Upset Win
Commits to Champions Tour event in Baltimore
BALTIMORE (August 11, 2004) - Organizers for the 2004 Constellation Energy
Classic (CEC) today announced that 2004 Senior British Open Champion, Pete
Oakley, has committed to compete in the Baltimore-area stop of the PGA TOUR
Champions Tour, to be held at Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Md., from
Sept. 27 - Oct. 3, 2004.
Oakley, 55, won the 2004 British Open in Portrush, Northern Ireland on July
25. He bested a field packed with the best golfers in the world over the age of
50. He is the first player who had to qualify for the Senior British Open and
went on to win in the event's 18-year history. Oakley's previous best showing in
an event on the Champions Tour was a tie for 32nd in the 2002 Senior PGA
Championship.
A resident of Lincoln, Del., Oakley is the director of golf, general manager,
co-owner and course architect of The Rookery in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
"We couldn't be more excited to have 2004 Senior British Open Champion, Pete
Oakley in the field for the Constellation Energy Classic," said Joe Rotellini,
tournament director of the CEC. "His gritty performance and will to win against
long odds are what the Champions Tour is all about. Not only does this tour
feature some of the best ever to play the game, it also provides an opportunity
for relatively unknown players over 50 to show that they can compete at the
highest level."
The field for the Constellation Energy Classic is shaping up to be one of the
top non-major fields on the Champions Tour all year. In addition to defending
champion Larry Nelson, Tom Watson, Peter Jacobsen and Baltimore native Jim
Thorpe will be competing for a purse of $1.6 million at this year's
Constellation Energy Classic. Many more marquee players are expected to commit
to the event in the coming weeks. Proceeds from the Constellation Energy
Classic will be distributed to nonprofit organizations through a charitable
foundation called the Baltimore Classic Fund, Inc. The Fund will benefit three
Maryland-based charities - the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Kennedy Krieger
Institute and the Living Classrooms Foundation - and a fourth organization - the
Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins. Last year more than
$300,000 was raised for organizations through the Fund.
