Turning Stone Resort Championship Week: Golf By Day, Music & Comedy by Night

August 3, 2007

Sports fans' eyes will be on the Turning Stone Resort Championship, the first stop on the PGA Tour's Fall Series Sept. 17-23. But, as always, there's more going on at the Oneida Indian Nation's Turning Stone Resort than a terrific golf tournament. A full slate of musical and comedic entertainment is scheduled for the week, in addition to the many amenities Turning Stone offers guests every day.

One Sweet World: Dave Matthews Tribute Band starts the week with an 8 p.m. performance in the Showroom. Like the band it honors, One Sweet World offers energetic and to-the-note perfect recreations of one of the most influential jam bands in a generation. Expect all the things you love about a live DMB concert - all of your favorite hits, some rare cuts, and spontaneous and exciting extended jams. And, just like DMB, no two shows are ever the same. For more information about One Sweet World, visit www.onesweetworld.net. Tickets are $10, $15, and $20.

While One Sweet World is rocking the Showroom, Larry the Cable Guy will "Git-R-Done" in the Event Center. Dan Whitney, better known as one quarter of the "Blue Collar Comedy" set, has spent the past few years letting his alter ego spread his wings. Since 2003, Larry the Cable Guy has starred in three "Blue Collar" movies and headlined his own major motion picture, "Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector." In 2005, he won Billboard's Comedy Artist of the Year award, and his album, "The Right to Bare Arms," captured the Album of the Year award. Last year, on the heels of releasing his best-selling book, "Git-R-Done," he provided the voice of Mater, the tow truck, in the Disney/Pixar animated film, "Cars." Learn more about Larry at www.larrythecableguy.com. Tickets to his 8 p.m. performance are $65.

Michael Bolton's adaptability may be the secret to his longevity in the often-fickle entertainment business. He started out as a 1980s hard rocker, recast himself as a soft rocker in the 1990s, and now, even as he promotes his latest album, "Vintage," covers of standards from the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s, he's looking into becoming a daytime talk show host. The prolific singer/songwriter still has time to tour, though, and he makes a return appearance in the Showroom on Tuesday, Sept. 18. You can follow his remarkable career at www.michaelbolton.com. Tickets to the 8 p.m. concert are $65, $70, and $80.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, commonly described as "the world's greatest bar band," continue to entertain patrons at every corner of the globe. The group has been touring nearly continually since early 2002, with concert dates throughout the United States and across the pond in the United Kingdom, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany. Learn more about them at www.southsidejohnny.com, and plan to catch their 8 p.m. performance in the Showroom on Thursday, Sept. 20. Tickets are $25, $30 and $40.

If sharp-dressed men are more your thing, check out ZZ Top in the Event Center Thursday, Sept. 20. ZZ Top, often classified as an American blues rock band, formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The group members are Billy Gibbons (guitar, lead vocals), Dusty Hill (bass, lead vocals), and Frank Beard (drums, percussion). According to Billy Gibbons in his book "Rock + Roll Gearhead," the band's name was inspired by blues musician B.B. King. He says they wanted to call themselves Z.Z. King, but decided that was too similar to B.B.'s name. They chose ZZ Top because King is the "top" blues man. Visit their web site, www.zztop.com, for more information. Tickets for their 8 p.m. concert are $55.

For the past three years, comedienne Kathy Griffin has made "Life on the D-List" a source of laughs on cable's Bravo. The Emmy-nominated Chicago native brings her brand of "you-know-she-shouldn't-say-it-but-you-can't-wait-to-hear-it" comedy to the Showroom on Friday, Sept. 21, for an 8 p.m. performance. To learn more about Griffin's career, check out www.kathygriffin.net. Tickets to her show are $50, $60, and $70.
