THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Dec. 18) - The sun came out Thursday at Sherwood Country Club, and so did the best of Jim Furyk,
who put together a four-under 68 that was good enough to take the first round lead of the $5.75 Chevron World Challenge Presented
by Bank of America.
Furyk birdied two of his last four holes and is two shots ahead of K.J. Choi and Boo Weekley. Furyk said he hasn't played
much golf lately and was surprised by what he managed on opening day.
"To be honest, my expectations weren't that high. The goal was obviously to come in and play well and try to win the golf
tournament, but as little as I've been playing, I wanted to just kind of get my feet wet and little by little chip away and
try to put a good round together."
After the first round, there are 12 players within six shots of Furyk. Choi, who played the back nine in three under,
said he got the most out of his day.
"Very quality and first class tournament," he said.
The 16 players in the tournament field are competing for a winner's share of $1.35 million.
