Tiger Woods Commits to the 2009 AT&T National

June 10, 2009

BETHESDA, Md. - Tiger Woods expanded his role from tournament host to also include tournament player, and officially announced he is entering the prestigious 2009 AT&T National during a news conference held April 20 at Congressional Country Club.

The $6 million, three-year-old event will be played July 2-5 at the demanding 7,173-yard Blue Course in Bethesda, Md.  Woods, who hosts the tournament, returns to join what promises to be a star-studded field after being forced to the sidelines last year because of knee surgery.

"I was obviously disappointed not being able to play last year," Woods said.  "But I'm excited about being completely healthy and playing and competing this year."

Anthony Kim is the defending champion, following K.J. Choi, who captured the title in the AT&T National's first year.  Kim's rounds of 67-67-69-65 and 12-under par total of 268 earned him a two-shot victory over Fredrik Jacobson and the winner's check of $1.08 million.

Kim, who came from three shots off the lead the last day, said he's happy to be defending his title.

"I'm absolutely looking forward to being back," Kim said.  "Any time you can play in an event associated with Tiger Woods, it's a real honor and a privilege."

Kim's victory at Congressional was his second of the year in what turned out to be a breakout season.  Kim won $4.6 million in 2008 and played a vital role in the Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., where the U.S. defeated Europe.

The AT&T National is a prominent stop on the PGA Tour and an important piece in the FedEx Cup race.

Woods' 2008 season was cut short after he won the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in June at La Jolla, Calif.  He had left knee ligament replacement surgery and did not play again until the Accenture Match Play Championship the last week of February 2009.

Woods, who earned his 66th PGA Tour victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in March, tied for 6th at the Masters, the first major he's played since he picked up his 14th major title at Torrey Pines.

About Congressional Country Club The Congressional Country Club, which opened in 1924, is par-72 course covering 7,173 yards. The course has played host to four majors--two U.S. Opens (1964 and 1997), one PGA Championship (1976) and the U.S. Senior Open (1995) and will host the U.S. Open once again in 2011.  The Kemper Open was played there from 1980-86 and the Booz Allen Classic was held there in 2005.

Congressman Oscar E. Bland and O.R. Lubring of Indiana, founders of the Club, set out to provide an informal common ground where politicians and businessmen could meet as peers, unconstrained by red tape. They took their idea to Herbert Hoover, then Secretary of Commerce, who agreed to serve as Founders' Club President and, from 1922-1923, Honorary Founding President of a soon-to-be-built Congressional Country Club. Primarily because of the determination of these original two visionaries, the Club was incorporated in December 1921. Construction of the Club took two and one-half years from concept to completion. Its international recognition, intended for the world of politics, has been achieved instead in the world of golf.
