AT&T To Sponsor New PGA TOUR Event in Washington, D.C. Benefiting
Tiger Woods Foundation
WASHINGTON, DC - The PGA TOUR, in conjunction with the Tiger Woods Foundation, has announced AT&T as the title sponsor
of the new PGA TOUR tournament that will debut this July in Washington, DC.
AT&T Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre joined PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem and Tiger Woods today at a press conference
that provided further details on the AT&T National, which will be held the week of July 2-8 with a purse of $6 million
and benefit the Tiger Woods Foundation.
"AT&T is proud to partner with Tiger Woods, his foundation and the PGA TOUR on what promises to be a first-class tournament
and one of the most anticipated events on the TOUR schedule," Whitacre said. "It's appropriate that during the week Americans
celebrate their freedom, the AT&T National will benefit young people and will pay tribute to the men and women serving
in our Armed Forces."
The host course for the tournament has yet to be announced. The Tiger Woods Foundation will serve as the event's host organization
and primary charitable beneficiary. Additionally, each year the tournament will recognize and honor the men and women serving
in our Armed Services.
"We are extremely pleased that AT&T has expanded its presence on the PGA TOUR by agreeing to sponsor the AT&T National,"
Finchem said. "AT&T is a longtime partner of the TOUR and has helped generate more than $100 million for local charities
through its existing golf sponsorships. We believe the AT&T National will have a tremendous impact as the newest event
on the PGA TOUR."
"We hope to make the AT&T National a great tradition in this community and look forward to a wonderful partnership
with AT&T and the PGA TOUR," Woods said. "I'm thrilled the AT&T National is helping facilitate my Foundation's East
Coast expansion. We plan to make a lasting impact in this community - both on and off the course."
In addition to the AT&T National, AT&T is the title sponsor of the PGA TOUR's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am,
Monterey, CA, and AT&T Classic, Atlanta; as well as the Champions Tour's AT&T Championship, San Antonio, and AT&T
Champions Classic, Los Angeles.
About the PGA TOUR The PGA TOUR is a tax-exempt membership organization of professional golfers. Its
primary purpose is to provide competitive earnings opportunities for past, current and future members of the PGA TOUR, Champions
Tour and Nationwide Tour; to protect the integrity of the game; and to help grow the reach of the game in the U.S. and around
the world.
In 2007, the three Tours will compete in approximately 110 events for approximately $340 million in prize money. Tournaments
are being held in six countries outside the U.S. and in 36 states. In addition to providing competitive opportunities for
its membership, TOUR events also generate significant funds for local charities. In fact, the three Tours have surpassed the
$1 billion mark in overall charitable contributions.
The PGA TOUR's web site address is www.pgatour.com and the company
is headquartered in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
About the Tiger Woods Foundation Since its inception in 1996 by Tiger Woods and his father Earl, the
Tiger Woods Foundation has reached an estimated 10 million young people through character development, career exploration
and grant making programs. Programs developed and supported by the Tiger Woods Foundation all share a similar mission of empowering
young people to dream big and to set specific goals to achieve their dreams.
The Tiger Woods Learning Center is a youth-education facility and curriculum created by the Tiger Woods Foundation. Launched
in February, 2006, the Tiger Woods Learning Center is an innovative 14-acre, after school campus designed to inspire career
exploration. Serving members in grades 5 through 12, classes include forensic science, robotics, engineering, aerospace, video
production and home design. Start Something, based on Earl Woods' best-selling book, is a free program for youth 8-17 that
addresses three priorities: character education, volunteer service and career exploration. Through participation in Start
Something, youth define a specific personal goal and develop an action plan to achieve it while giving back to their community
and exploring careers that fit within their areas of interest.
